Age: 20
Country: Lebanon
Your current project(s):
Coordinating the work of GYAN in the Arab Region.
When did you start?
I first started in youth activism when I was twelve years old through UNESCO/UNEP beach cleanups in Kuwait. This created a youth lobby to raise more awareness towards environmental problems in the country. A project, which I was heavily involved in.
Why is youth participation important?
Youth participation is important because youth are an integral part of society. They, according to the saying, are "the future leaders of the world," or "the future of the world." However, youth are not being trained, and are not taking part in creating the society they want their own and future generations to live in. And like any human, everyone should be given the opportunity to contribute to sustainable development in their country, region and world. By participating, be it in decision making, in projects, or whatever form, we are becoming agents of change, hopefully positive change.
What can be done to promote more youth participation?
Youth themselves must realize the need for them to participate and raise awareness towards this issue. Also, youth must learn not to accept 'NO' for an answer and take matters into their hands if they feel there is a need to.
