Participation - Case Studies
Charles Sendegeya
Age: 24
Country: Ghana

Your current project(s):
TakingITGlobal: "Creating Local Connections amongst Youth in Uganda," and Mondialogo Engineering Award: "Energy and Sanitation Project."

How do you participate?
I participate in these projects by mobilizing young people to join the cause. First by explaining to them the aims and objectives of the projects so that they can find reason to get involved and then facilitating their involvement by helping them to access crucial information necessary in order to get involved. I also participate by enlisting support of other stakeholders that may get involved indirectly by advising or providing financial assistance. Other ways I participate is by giving my time to plan activities, prepare proposals and to publicize activities in these projects. I also contribute articles to the local newspaper.

When did you start?
I started getting involved in the TIG Project in 2001 and the other in November 2003.

Why is youth participation important?
Youth have fresh ideas, and they are very innovative. Their contributions would lead to many positive changes in society. Youth participation has been neglected for a very long time in some communities.Youth participation helps build a sense of responsibility among young people. By getting involved in making certain decisions or participating in activities, youth realize that they too have a share of responsibility for the outcomes of those actions. Without participation of young people in projects or processes that directly concern them, implementation can be extremely difficult as they can be rebellious to authorities or cause unnecessary setbacks while seeking explanations from those in charge (for example, strikes in universities).

What can be done to promote more youth participation?
1. Channels should be put in place (by schools, local government authorities, government ministries) to ensure that views of youth are obtained and that youth are well represented in the making of decisions that affect them.

2. Wider and open circulation of information regarding opportunities for young people to participate in projects (of NGOs or government) should be done using as much media as possible.
