I'm not sure I agree?!?
David Martin | Dec 23rd, 2004
I'm not sure your interpretation of the phrase "sustainable development" and mine interpretation of that same phrase are in any way similar. Just the fact that you used the word exploited, in your definition of sustainable development sets off a cascade of criticism in my mind. Sustainable development is about smart growth, green builidings, more environmentally friendly cities, and ecologically conscious economies. Yes I will agree that sustainable use of natural resources is involved, and is the keystone of a sustainable culture. However, I do not see HIV or any other disease as a threat to sustainable development. This may sound cruel and insensitive, but humans are not the most important resource, at least not at this point in time. Humans are perhaps the most expendable commodity on the planet. Some would argue that there are too many of us already. Honestly any drop in human population would be good for sustainable development. Perhaps society would have a chance to reevaluate what direction it would like to see the world go: sustainably or otherwise. I again I realize that the above sounds cruela and insensitive, but I am not attempting to offend anyone. Rather just point out that while both the fight against HIV/AIDS and the fight for sustainable development are both worthy causes, attempting to link HIV/AIDS to sustainable development in an attempt to garner more support for the HIV/AIDS cause is not an honorable way to do so. Perhaps a more effective way to get the word out about HIV/AIDS would be to dicuss the large numbers of children born into the world HIV positive, who are completely innocent and have no control over there own destinies. Just a thought!

I agree

When AIDS takes its toll on the energetic members of the society development is bound to be retarded. Good insight.
