Imagine a world where there were no teachers, you get to stay at home and watch TV, 24/7. Are you happy about that? You’re not forced to go to school and you don’t have to learn. But without realizing it, you are learning from the Media. You watch cartoons and reality TV. But which is better? What do you think?

If you look back into your childhood, you would notice something. The two types of shows you watched continuously were cartoons or anime (animation) and reality TV, which you’re still watching. After watching these shows for so many years, do you have a favourite show and what genre is it? Is it cartoons or reality TV?

Many shows are played constantly like ads. They’re everywhere and you are constantly exposed to them. However, there is certain type of genre that is beneficial at your age and/or in life.

At a very young age, kids are exposed to cartoons. There are a variety of shows for any age. There are shows for kids between the ages of three to five; six to eight; nine and up and twelve and up. Some examples of these shows are Babar, Arthur, Sailor Moon, the Magic School Bus etc... For viewers of any age, including adults, there are cartoons that have been on for very long time and have grown up with you. For example: The Simpsons. It has been on for fifteen years and they’re still on for their funny remarks and educational lessons.

Reality TV on the other hand are suitable for older viewers (fourteen and up.) There are some shows that are rated fourteen an up such as The Jimmy Kimmel Live. Even if some shows are rated PG, it’s full of cruel and disgusting images. An example of a show is Fear Factor. They’ve got contestants eating maggots, bugs etc.

There are morals in cartoons that teach us lessons that we would and should remember. Some morals aren’t as obvious like in story books, but the message is there. You have to examine it closely to know what the message is. Cartoons are almost sending subliminal messages that would help you in life. It is also another way “to warn us (or the younger generation) about the multiple dangers in our civilization, or to simply carry moral and social messages.” In order to warn or teach us, “these shows display their message by an obvious exaggeration of society.” We treat these lessons like we treat our loved ones. You’ll cherish them forever and the messages or morals you learned will get you through life.

The danger in TV is what you watch and right now, the danger is reality TV. “Most reality TV premise played on sexist stereotypes.” On reality TV, we only see people that are ‘perfect’ On Fear Factor; there are only women that have ‘perfect’ bodies and faces. The men are either muscular of has a great face. What happened to normal or not in shape or physically challenged people? Our society is made of stereotyping. Males on Fear Factor are always making comments about their female opponents on how they are stereotypical women. Also, in the Media, it’s always the male version of the show being advertised before the female version. For example: The Bachelor before The Bachlorette. What happened to equity?

Cartoons are not like that. Cartoons influence others to be a positive person. It influences you on how you should act in society, but not how you should be in the Media. Most people in society are playing a role in the Media. They’re pawns as advertisements. Cartoons just help you reach your inner self. The Simpsons is a great example. It’s “one of the best-loved and influential television show to come down…”

Reality TV influences us on how we should in the Media. Young people are influenced “by the shameless shenanigans they watch on reality television shows.” Reality TV isn’t helping you, but them. Reality TV on influences you to dress and look a certain way, so you could buy their products.

Cartoons, reality TV; no one can make your decision but yourself. Just remember what cartoons and reality TV can do for you. Does it teach you positive messages and influences that would help you in life and would you watch it when you grow up? Think carefully or you’ll regret it. You don’t want to grow up as a pawn of the Media, or do you? Make your decision now!
