Poverty and the Rights of the Child Printable Version PRINTABLE VERSION

Child & Youth Rights , Labour Rights   Interviews

Perhaps it may be in bad taste to impute intentional disregard or disobedience to the rules, as it is the desire of every parent to accord their children the best. But what happens when poverty dictates otherwise. Faced with the harsh realities of poverty many children are forced into life threatening situations all in the name of survival.

In our part of the world, where the rule is, “survival by all means necessary’, the abuse of the rights of the child is a simple issue of survival. Faced with the harsh realities of poverty parents, institutions and governments have virtually thrown overboard almost all the rights of the African child outlined in the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

Indeed, where poverty calls the tune and poor parents must dance to its music, the article in the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the child which reads; “Every child shall be protected from all forms of economic exploitation and from performing any work that is likely to be hazardous or to interfere with the child's physical, mental, spiritual, moral, or social development”, is but a wishful thought.

Solace, i agree with you in all aspect, your write-up is good, and really talks about the margenalisation of the African child by the "bigwigs". i think its time all these change.

Its so sorry to here that the children are being victim of the poverty. But the bitter reality has made us bound to face the truth. Its very hot issue you have raised in. and the article is nice in itself.
