sex sex sex sex sex... everywhere you look, there it is. Especially in television. Can you honestly think of a popular show that does not have sex in it?! I can't... and that scares me. Have we lost all sense of entertainment that we cannot live without sex in what we watch? Will shows not get good ratings if they don't show sex? Seems to me that every show just has to have sex in it now or it won't be good. People have lost all sense of entertainment that without sex, a show is not good. Or maybe it's the writers who have just become so brain dead that they can't come up with decent story lines.

But that's not true. A show can be perfectly great without showing sex, and ratings can be just as great too! But no one seems to get that and perfectly good shows are being sleez-a-fied with sex. What is it with western society and sex? Now, if sex was being discussed to inform people of the disadvantages of not having safe sex then, yeah maybe it would be alright but they still wouldn't have to show it.... they could discuss it. Showing people have sex, or pre-sex or post-sex does not do anything for the story. I just do not see the appeal of watching other people get laid.... it's not gonna help the desperate viewer get anything.

Case 1
Beverly Hills 90210 - when this show started it was just about the adventures of highschool and they had great ratings. By their 3rd or 4th season, sex became such an intricate part of their show that almost every episode had some reference to sex. The show did not do any better with this new addition and may have actually lost cost them viewers.. i know i stopped watching afterwards.

Case 2
Friends - when this show started it was just comedy, with normal dating. Pretty soon it became semi-sex oriented... although this show is not one of the worse shows, but still has more sex oriented themes than necessary. They are perfectly funny without the sex.

Case 3
Buffy the Vampire Slayer - I've watched this show from the beginning and up until this season they had practically no sex. Now, it's all about Buffy's sex relationship with Spike.

Case 4
Every single soap opera - I've watched more than my share of soaps and the amount of sex they show is incredible. Almost every character sleeps with every other character. They sleep around so much that it actually diminishes the value of sex... making love with the person you love doesn't matter... you fall in love almost as many times as sex is shown.

None of these show's ratings have increased and in fact, they've probably lost viewers because it's no longer appropriate for them. How many young children watch those shows? How many end up thinking that a relationship is only successful if they sleep together? How many grow up thinking that sex is all there is to life. But why? what is it about watching sex that appeals to people..... why must shows devalue themselves by having their characters sleep with everybody.

If writers can no longer think of plots, wouldn't it be more dignifying to cancel the show instead of resorting to having everyone sleep with everyone else?

All this sex on television gives people the wrong idea about sex; diminishes the once treasured value of sex - now it's all about having it.. doesn't matter with who; overall diminishes the value of the show itself and its writers for not being able to come up with story plots without sex in them; and does mentally affect people (it's been proven that people who watch alot of porn have psychological problems)

Sex in TV is completely unnecessary.

I understand what you're saying.

The only show I can think of, at the moment, that isn't sex sex sex is ER (Emergency Room). ER is pretty much the only show I watch, other than that I watch a lot of PBS. I especially love the nature shows. Also there was a show on about Mark Twain that was interesting and informative. The latest thing was about Queen Elizabeth. So if a person dosen't want to watch sex all the time I suggest Public Television.

i get your point of view...but...

pornography and Friends aren't really in the same league. Anyone watching porn all the time must have issues. but... Sex sells, period. It's everywhere you look. On the most part, i don't think t.v. is devaluing sex all too much, but rather perhaps forcing people to become aware of their own sexuality, and you could say comfortable/uncomfortable acception of it. It's over used i will say that, but it depends on the programming you're watching. Society has become more open with their sexual tendencies, and it isn't as though those shows don't deal with "real world" issues in regards to sex. IE. Beverly Hills 90210 - that show although sex was a part, it is a part of most coming of age experiences. From pregnancy to aids, to rape, to drugs...mixed into alot of fluff and dramatics, of course. Friends, it did start with dating, but as most relationships do, it progresses, people have sex. Some people are active and others aren't. There is usualy that sense of responsibility and intent within it. As for soap operas, i totally agree with the overabundance of sex, and i've yet to understand the true reason. Perhaps all this sex on tv isn't as huge a deal for me. There are alot of shows that don't have an overabundance of sex, but still have conotations of it in humourous manners. I'm comfortable with my sexuality, perhaps that gives me a different perspective. But remember you don't have to watch TV.

sex or violence
phil audet | Feb 26th, 2002
This should stir the pot a bit. I personally would rather see a show with some sex then senseless violence. Most people in north america would rather they or their children watch a violent show then see a set of breasts or references to sex on TV Personally, I feel about 90 percent of TV is trash anyways. If people are happy to sit and be passively (sp?) entertained by friend or any of that other trash then all the power to them, I'll hopefully be up to something a bit more productive or enjoyable. Just my 2 cents.

Sex Sells
Catarina Abreu | Sep 30th, 2002
Unfortunately, in the business world, these moral values are fine and dandy, but when you get to the nitty gritty of it, sex sells. And if sex sells, then more money is being made and the people running these things, that's all that matters. I agree with you when you say that media has devalued sex into something superficial. It's also made people have the misconception that lust=love which it isn't AT ALL. And then we wonder why there are so many divorces nowadays. Media is teaching us that love, relationships are superficial. When the going gets tough, its ok to give up because love isn't long lasting. What most people don't realise is that love is far deeper than sex. Infact, its about commitment, trust, appreciation and sticking by the person no matter what, through good AND bad.
