The events and the rhetoric surrounding the expulsion of the Roma from France this year are a stark reminder that both belonging and exclusion on the basis of race, ethnicity and religion continue to shape the daily lived realities of people worldwide. Much can be said about structural forms of discrimination and their impact on political minorities in various states. Similarly, the rise of ethnic and religious nationalisms worldwide is a phenomenon that deserves focused attention. In line with these thoughts, this issue asks you to think about belonging, exclusion, and how we conceive of ourselves and of our places within or outside our communities.
What are some of the different forms of discrimination that have affected you? What are some of the ways that you have been made to feel as though you belong to a community? How does this affect your life?
Also, in November two important International Days take place: the International Day for Tolerance on the 16th, and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on the 25th. Now is your opportunity to share your thoughts on any of the issues mentioned above!
