Mike’s attraction to education has taken him to another level of commitment. The mayor of Ashland deemed Mike --not a resident of Ashland-- Chairman of the Tree Advisory Board. Mike imparts, “The City of Ashland is appreciating our work with the Urban Forestry project. It is moving right along, the timing was right for it.” The Tree Board also consists of David Frasier, representatives from the city staff, and representatives from Northland College. Every Arbor Day, Ashland plants a tree; last year the Tree Board planted trees on the corner of Vaughn and 6th Street at Railyard Park.

Mayor Frank Snook says, “Mike has been a great guy, he is patient and soft- spoken, and stands by his principles, and is someone who can explain how to plant the right species of trees to introduce in the area and how that is important. “

How does Mike describe himself? He says, “I am driven a little more than others. Something about my upbringing and beliefs forces me to be an active citizen. I don’t have a lot of degrees. I am just a person that respects others.” He wants younger generations to remember, “Learning is lifelong.” Mike says, “Through education you are creating a foundation you can use for the rest of your life. It took me thirty years to get my degree. Challenge everything. Question everything.”
