Modernization is blamed as one of the reasons for the youth to forget their culture. Many parents in urban areas are not practicing their culture; as a result the youth are not exposed or interactive with their own culture. Parents have already forgotten their responsibilities; they should maintain and improve their culture by teaching it to their children despite the gush of other intruding cultures dominating them. Nowadays, parents are making their children a Westerner instead of making them a Nepali. Our culture is being pushed aside by new models from abroad spreading by satellite. The logic of profit have always dominated the human minds similarly to the youth here, they go to different developed countries for opportunities for they are highly paid there. The youth who have gone to different countries like America and Australia in search of opportunities come back as an American or an Australian completely, not a Nepali.
The food reflects the tradition of our country. The young generation has already forgotten the traditional food like “gundruk”, “sinki”, etc. instead it is replaced by fast food, etc. Fast food has already dominated the world in food. T-shirts and jeans have already dominated the entire youth clothes market. National dress must also be given priority. Nepalese sweets are in the point of extinction because everybody prefers foreign sweets. The foreign movies have already dominated Nepali movies. Many youth doesn’t like the presentation and screening of the actors but we can work for the betterment.
The nature of the youth is that they want to learn from what they are exposed to, as youth are highly influenced by satellite television, they interact with other cultures and are influenced by it. Nepal television is promoting Nepalese culture and tradition by showing different cultural shows but a very small number of youth is interested in it. Youth here are changing from their Nepali identity therefore it is really essential to educate the youth about culture because Nepali identity should pass from them to the next generation after them. This doesn’t mean that youth should ignore modernization, but it means that youth can go with modernization along with their culture.

This is a quote from a friend in Nepal: "Talking about 'Nepal losing it's cultural identity', i don't really think being modern and using all modern stuffs really means that we r actually
losing our culture. ... there are a lotta conservative people who think the young generation is forgetting their culture just becoz they don't wear traditional dress!! there are all sorts of other absurd reasons saying youth of nepal are forgetting their culture. we do have our own culture and we celebrate all our festivals and tradition but in slightly modified way. there is always changes in new generation right? one thing that i'm really proud of is how youths haven't let down the tradition around here. it was just a couple of month ago when a group of youth here at my home town organised the traditional 'mandala' drawing competition. (this is a tradition art) The drawings were really good and better than those of older generation. Also i have seen all young people actively participating in all festivals we have. we almost have a couple of festivals every month. so how could it be said we r loosing our cultural identity???"
My comment:
If what you are saying is true then that is sad. However, if people don't want to continue traditions they see outdated or insignificant and want to take on aspects of other cultures in their lives then it is such a bad thing? Saris look beautiful on Nepali women but why should it be worn just to stick to tradition? What useful function does this kind of tradition have in any society - really?

There has always been change and there will always be change. We may feel sad when we see the effect of global media and global trends overpowering some of the wonderful individual customs and cultural differences that make the world such an interesting and diverse place BUT if we all put our efforts into finding new ways to promote this diversity and share our individual cultures we may find that, just as many young people from Nepal seem to be adopting the dress, eating habits and customs of what they see as the "modern world", there will be young people from Austalia, US and Europe etc. who are interested in learning about as well as helping to promote and preserve the more traditional customs of Nepal in an effort to both maintain world diversity and demonstrate their own individuality in a more creative fashion. Might it not be a more positive move to find ways of globalizing the many cultures of the planet instead of trying to hang on to the geographic divisions within which they originated. Globalization, modernization and rapid changes in technology are part of the world we now share. Let us all look for ways to share our individual cultures as well.
