Make me a believer (September 2005)
I believe in love and hate
As well as in mercy and in feelings spared
I believe in karma- that we reap what we sow
And I know hard work pays off
I believe in planning for the future
That it does not pay to count troubles’ costs
But sometimes it’s difficult to keep breathing
When so much that was hoped for has been lost
If it isn’t too presumptuous and rude to dare
Please make me a believer – show me how you care
If war is not the answer
While peace has had its chance
And some continue to line in conditions that hardly seem fair
If after all the motivation, innovation and elevation
Some still must face profiling and discrimination
Be disenfranchised and face segregation
What purposes are served by coalitions and universal condemnations of “isolated situations” that turn out to be “proclamations” of rapidly spreading distrust-?
Of a system that marginalizes “us”?
Love should be “all around” as the song goes
And in our hearts everybody knows that what we want most is companionship
People with common interests with whom to share our lives,
Our dreams, our hopes, our fears and afterwards we listen to theirs…
I want to see beauty and be surrounded by good
But so often beauty is clouded
Good intentions are misunderstood
The situations people must face daily
Oscillate between delight and despair
I find the need to question what it is about life that is fair
Make me a believer in answered prayer
Hustling is never easy, simple answers come rarely and to few
The last thing one should expect in this day and age
Is for other people to trust you
It seems that the harder the struggle
The heavier the load is to bear
And looking around for sympathy
Only incurs contempt for the meek,
Impatience with the weak- an almost communal absence of care
Make me a believer that equitable justice reigns in the world out there
If timing is really everything
Opportunities and tools for success play no necessary role
Why are so many still disabled
Even while physically whole?
So much is dark
So bleak the future seems to me to be
Make me a believer in the strength and morality
Of humanity
My faith is running low
