I once read a post on colour, race and religion, and I thought to myself, “You know, that's true.” It is true that there is a great disparity between the people of the world based on colour, race or creed. Let me bring it closer to home. There is a great divide in the Nigerian society based on whether one is Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba. Muslim or Christian. Rich or poor. That is bad. Just look at the organizational structure of any Federal organization or ministry, and you are bound to, if you are true to yourself, feel a little bit embarrassed, if not a whole lot embarrassed! What are we turning to?

We talk about a global village, but we seem to forget that before a village can be peaceful, the families that make up that village must settle within themselves to be peaceful. To earn respect, that family must abide by the rules governing such a community, and must conduct themselves in a respectable manner. In all truth, if we do not respect ourselves as Nigerians, how can the world respect us? Is it the world that increases our fuel prices while those that bunker them are in power? Is it the world that tramples on the rights of the ordinary people, rig elections, beat up journalists, assassinate political opponents and corrupt the whole democratic institution? Is it the world? When walking along the road, if you are approached by a half clad person who cares nothing about proper dressing will you not walk faster, so as not to be associated with such a person? Will you not seek to protect your image, your "rep?" That is what is happening to us today. Nigeria has become a stench in the nose of the world, and it is up to us to clean up this mess and bring a new meaning to the word NIGERIA. Are South Africans not Africans? Yet they command a lot of respect in the world. Russia, which is respected by the US, is a "third world" country!

However, I am not trying to say that the reason why we are treated as we are is solely because of our own inhumanity to ourselves. Some people are still incurably racist. Let us pray we never meet such. But if we do, let us hope that our legal system has fully developed to handle such.

Those that kill or discriminate in the name of religion are fools. Still, the government should endeavor to put food on the table of everyone, and money in their pockets through creation of jobs, so that people will refuse to be used by some parochial, evil haters of progress to tear down the fragile walls of this country.

We the youth should start working on ourselves so that we will bring a new order into Nigeria. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria! God bless her.
