Whether they're spiking their hair, wondering what frames for their glasses to purchase, colour-coding their outfits or running through a mall for the perfect pair of shoes, everyone cares about their looks. We all want to have an image, one that makes us unique and different, but we all fancy an outfit of which appeals to ourselves.

Now, does that mean that we can walk into school with absolute low-rider pants that are stonewashed, which you especially paid for so it would look as though they are “worn-out”, or pants two sizes too big, just barely holding on to the bottom of your rear? What about those clunky high-heeled schoolgirl shoes, and the latest of Michael Jordan’s running shoes from Nike? Let’s talk shirts as well – low-cleavage, tight shirts that are see-through exposing every little inch of that brassiere, or those large jerseys that are two sizes too big? This sounds pretty familiar, doesn’t it?

Students are generally into new fashions and the new styles in stores, and if not, they will be exposed to these new fads soon enough. As the style changes, so do the clothes. We all try to gain our own individuality with the clothes we wear, going from store to store trying to find the perfect shirts and pants, lining the racks. But if we’re trying to find something to our own tastes, wouldn’t that mean we have to go through the latest fashions anyways? We do, and that’s what we’re all currently inundated with. We’re influenced by the new tastes. When a new creation is in, we empty our closets with the old unstylish things, and reload it. Not only do we do that, we always go for certain attire in which we shop endlessly for. We want the things that we not only like, but think is attractive, especially for sex-appeal, for which many clothes are designed nowadays. We want something that’s cool and better than the rest. We have a desire to wear an article of clothing that makes us look different, which in a way isn’t at all possible, considering that the chic stores sell the same styles and target the same tastes. Overall, we want to be the first to get the grabs, the one to best resemble the celebrities, the one to shine in the light. The heat is on.

Look around. Look at our society. Now go turn on MuchMusic. See any resemblance? I do…I could swear I saw a shirt so similar to that of Britney Spears…and you know what, you’re wearing it right now. Every time we turn on the television, there are always models and actors in commercials and shows, with the new clothes, creating a new image. This is a great influence on how we decide to dress. We want to follow the trend. We automatically assume that they have the flow with the gear, and as a result, we copy them. Students of our age try to copy their hairstyles, bleaching the tips, or new cuts. We try to copy their jewellery and make-up styles, and take their tips. As a result, we end up keeping pace with the stars, wanting to be them. As a result, what they wear, we try to wear, or resemble as close as possible.

But is media our only influence? It can’t be, because we want to be comfortable with what we’re wearing as well. Think about all the possibilities of our influences. For starters, students are in an environment full of people their age. We choose the clothes that reflect our personalities, our styles, and our wants. Aside from this, no matter how much one claims to the contrary, there’s always a little bit of us that wants to please other people, and grab their attention. Other’s people’s comments and thoughts upon our physical appearance always attack us. In the end, we try to please them as well – and we always will try.

Trying to be accepted using clothing happens in all grades. The main difficulty that we encounter is whom these chic stores are targeting with their clothes. All students, from elementary school all the way up to university, are “digging the groove with the in-flow”. Overall, it might be fine to do so, but one thing that is never considered is where would be an appropriate place to wear these scandalous clothes, if we’re even going to look decent in them. Flipping through the channels one day, I saw a news report, just like this story. Children still in elementary school are looking at crazy clothes to wear through their halls. The girls had short shorts on, the guys had the baggy-ness. First of all, these clothes aren’t accepted in schools. Don’t you clearly remember the rules that sleeves are a must, no holes, and shorts had to be longer than the tip of your fingertips if you stood up straight? How are they going to pass with this? Second of all, what would anyone older say if they saw these elementary students like this? What these children are doing is trying to wear clothes that they would think make them more “adult-ish”, more mature, and more attractive. It’s also possible that so many are enticed to wear these fashion statements as well, because just like the older students, these are the clothes available in stores. There comes a limit when choosing clothes. These fashion pieces should be appropriate, especially for the surroundings and the event of which they’re being worn.
