Although leadership development is widely acknowledged as important in government, business, various professions including education and community activities, its understanding is largely implicit. The central question for developing effective leadership program is how these efforts can be made deliberate and purposeful.
The Asia-Pacific region is confronted with the competing demands of economic growth, social security, globalization and environmental sustainability coupled with the desire to achieve world peace. It is in this context that there is a compelling need for a new breed of leaders who basically could emerge from educational institutions. These students’ leaders must be guided by a clear vision of the future, a vision that is dynamic and proactively responsive to the changing realities and anticipated conditions. They must have an intelligent and honest grasp of power, embody highest moral and ethical standards, and need to be skilled in the art of participation and negotiation.
"The ASEAN Student Leaders' Summit 2002" will therefore be an opportunity to unite students from many campuses in Asia and the Pacific, and bring campus leaders to share their views and concerns, and to help them come to terms with the implications of global conflicts.
The basic goal of any leadership development program is to change the participant in a way or another to arm them with tools or skills or a better knowledge of their abilities so that they can assume leadership roles in society. The Summit hopes to assist AUAP member institutions in developing students in becoming more effective and ethical leaders of the future. It is vital to help students understand why it is important to be fair, conscientious and moral leaders in their future careers in business, politics, education, government service or whatever profession.
Aside from interactive discussions on and to have a good grasp of global issues, the invited leadership development experts from the academic and business community will facilitate skill-building sessions focusing on five leadership areas: (1) CHALLENGING THE PROCESS - a practice that involves encouraging followers to question why things are done in a particular way; (2) INSPIRING A SHARED VISION - the conceptualization of the future; (3) ENABLING OTHERS TO ACT - the notion of providing support and direction in such a way that the followers gain a feeling of empowerment; (4) MODELING THE WAY - the idea of leading by examples, and (5) ENCOURAGING THE HEART - the notion that individuals in positions of leadership must provide support to the followers by encouraging them to strive for excellence. The invaluable interactions of the students to these experts are expected to provide a springboard to effective leadership.
The expected participants would be at least fifty student leaders from AUAP member institutions and from institutions in the ASEAN members. Selected participants will be those holding positions in the university student council or other recognized mandated organizations and must be in good academic standing.
The three day Summit will include symposium, interactive group discussions, presentations, skill building sessions, dialogue with educators, business, community leaders, government officials and other professional representatives.
A special highlight of the Summit is an ASEAN Cultural Festival. This is in line with the support of Angeles University to the ASEAN Foundation agenda of promoting the richness of Southeast Asia's culture to its people and to others outside the region as well as to raise the profile of the ASEAN in the international community.
As participants from each country showcase cultural performance that is uniquely their own, cultural understanding and tolerance of differences begin in this meaningful celebration in the common language of music and dance as it underscores the role of leadership in bringing peace and harmony among nations.
Summit participants will be charged US$75 or Ph.P 4,000 inclusive of local transportation, accommodation, meals, materials and tours. Shuttle service from Ninoy Aquino International Airport for foreign participants and from Domestic Airport for local participants, both in Manila will be provided if previous notice of arrival is given to the Secretariat.
The Summit and cultural night will be held at the Sampaguita Hall, International House and St. Cecilia's Adutorium of the Angels University. Participants will be billeted at the International House, Angels City while speakers and guests will be lodged at the Holiday Inn, Clark Field, Pampanga, Philippines.
