I once knew a girl with a gleam in her eye
She lived in the shadows of her mothers lie
And somehow, this girl, she had the world fooled
The smile was simply an act that she pulled

This girl had two children who were not her own
But without her guidance they’d hopelessly roam
A crack in the mirror, a flaw in design
Her self-esteem dwindled within record time

The lights did not work in the house where she lived
The faucet and sink had no water to give
The fridge always empty, the cabinets bare
Hostility growing and tinting the air

The fighting and screaming was endless it seemed
Her mother strung out on drugs from all teams
The boyfriend was crazy, the girl was afraid
He scared her and every glance seemed to degrade

I once knew a girl with a gleam in her eye
She lived in the shadows of her mothers lie
And somehow, this girl, she had the world fooled
The smile was simply an act that she pulled

Her nights were a terror you wouldn’t believe
Innocence lost she will never retrieve
Hands of a man that she fears like she hates
Her mother’s boyfriend with eyes like hell’s gates

And though the sun rose, the light became dark
The shame and intrusion sliced, emptied her heart
And each day he smiled with sinister grace
The devil’s eye glowing inside of his face

Her mother, she knew, with eyes cold as ice
Alcohol handy- the bottle her vice
Screamed ‘Why don’t you FUCK HIM?!’ and opened a beer
The girl knew the neighbors – the whole world could hear

I once knew a girl with a gleam in her eye
She lived in the shadows of her mothers lie
And somehow, this girl, she had the world fooled
The smile was simply an act that she pulled

Their habit—expensive—the money—all gone
The mother and boyfriend confused right from wrong
And sent the girl out and her sister to thieve
Two children stealing from stores just to eat

The girl was alone, depressed, and a freak
In school and in class she just could, would not speak
But she told her whole class of the ventures to steal
Just to fit in – to see how it feels

The kids in her class were heartless and frozen
The girl sat alone, still empty, still broken
Nobody cared for the child unsaved
Her cries for help just pushed them away

I once knew a girl with a gleam in her eye
She lived in the shadows of her mothers lie
And somehow, this girl, she had the world fooled
The smile was simply an act that she pulled

One day she came home and her mother was drunk
Hair was a mess, eyes bloodshot and sunk
She screamed and she yelled, and the boyfriend did too
So the girl pulled a knife, she’d had it! She’s through!

A punch in the face and the knife hit the floor
Each hit delivered hurt the girl a little more
The mother pulled back, one last blow to the head
The boyfriend cheered on; he should’ve been hit instead

‘Get out of my house!’ said the mother with rage
And into the cold, the girl left the black cage
Then in a dark house, down the street, long abandoned
The girl made a home, a twelve-year-old stranded

She pulled out a gun with a gleam in her eye
No tears, no ‘I’m sorry’ not even ‘good bye’
And with one final blast, the trigger was pulled
A goodbye to the past, and the world she had fooled.
