These words you say, "I love you,"
What do they mean?
I have heard these words before,
Misunderstood, and then wept.

You mean, "I love you now, as the setting sun reflects the gold of your hair!"
You mean, "I love you, while the wind presses your thin gown against your frail body!"
You mean, "I love you, when I hear your soft voice singing to me!"

Why do you abuse these words and deceive my heart?
For I know now, that when the sun sinks below the horizon and the reflection is gone,
When the wind dies down and my gown is still,
When I'm far away and you cannot hear my voice,
So also will your love cease.

No! Tell me not that you love me!
Adulterer of sacred words!
