Travel, do not fight!! (A Fairy Tale)

Once upon a time there lived a stuffed Russian Bear whose name was Vinnie-Pookh. He had a friend Winnie-the-Pooh. Winnie-the-Pooh was a Hollywood style stuffed Pooh-bear coming from Canada. Their friendship successfully symbolized the end of the Cold War and improvement in the relationship between the East and the West.

Like most good friends they liked to travel to different places. Vinnie Pookh always liked history, but however when at Soviet school he did not really learn much about the Crimean War. Only when he went to Crimea did he learn that the Russians actually lost the war and lots of people died in that war, however no plates, no special monuments to those who fought in the war are ever found in Saint Petersburg.

Several years later both of them went exploring the beauty of the Aland Islands which lie between Sweden and Finland. To their surprise they found the ruins of the Russian Fortress Bomarsund there. They never read about it in their History books, despite the fact that it was close to Saint Petersburg, where they lived.

“No wonder, it is a Russian fortress,” said Vinnie Pookh, “Alands in the XIXth century were part of Finland which was known as the Great Duchy of Finland and was part of the Russian Empire, the Russians had to have a fortress there at the outskirts of their Empire.”

“But why was it attacked by the French and the British Fleet and forced to surrender? That battle is considered to be part of the Crimean War. And you remember where Crimea is?” said Winnie-the-Pooh who managed to quickly browse through the Alands guide book.

“Hmm, that is interesting” said Vinnie Pookh, “I never thought that the Crimean War went that far up to the Baltic Sea and the place is neat and you can learn about the Crimean War here in Finland.”

From the same guide book they found out that after the Crimean War the Alands became a so-called demilitarized zone.

“I wonder what if the whole world would become a demilitarized zone someday,” said Winnie-the-Pooh thoughtfully.

Some years later they went to Sydney, Australia and were stunned to know that Fort Denisson that stands in the center of Darling Harbour, and is known to every citizen of Sydney, was actually built there in the 1850s to protect Sydney from possible Russian attack.

“Russian attack? In Sydney?” burst out Vinnie Pookh laughing, “Do not even go there!”

“Wait a minute, lets think” said Winnie-the-Pooh, who was reading Sydney’s quide book…

Here we have to stop the narration and let the readers guess why it was possible that a fort was built there in Sydney for that particular reason.

We should add that the Fort has never served a military purpose and stands there as a museum.

The Bears really hope that the whole world will become demilitarized and anything related to the military will become a museum exhibit and young people (and bears) will have the opportunity to travel.
