Altai is situated in the centre of Asia, on the same latitudes as central lands of Germany, Belgien, southern extremity of Great Britain and southern regions of Canada. Fauna is notable for its unique variety. Animals and birds typical for steppes and semi deserts.
There are many whitewater rivers in Altai. One of them is Katun. Katun originates from the glacier of Gebler, south side of Belukha. The second by full-flowing is the river Biya. On the confluence with Katun, it makes up the river Ob, one of the biggest rivers of Siberia. The rivers of Altai are unnavigable due to the rapids, exept of the lower flowing of Biya.
There are about seven thousand lakes here. The gratest of them – Teletskoye – is called as Altai see. Its square is 230,8 sq.km., more than territory of european state Liechtenstein. On the rivers of Altai there are a lot of waterfalls. The highest waterfall Tekelu is on the river of the same name. Its height is 60 metres.

Waterfalls Kokkol and Tegeek on the Katunsky ridge are of 40 meters. The height of many other waterfalls reaches 30-35 meters. Altai attracts tourists attention by its unique beauty. In spite of tourists pilgrimage Altai still reminds remote & rugged, native preserve. Rafting, hiking, mountaineering, skiing - all that you will find here.
The territory of Altai is occupied by mountains. Their height is over 3-4 thousand meters. The highest peak Belukha is 4506m.
Glacier Bolshoi Taldurinsky occupies about 35 square kilometers. More than 30 glaciers are on the slopes of Belukha. Ice thickness of these glaciers reaches to many tens and even hundreds metres. For example, glacier Bolshoi Akturu has 360 meters of thickness.
