St. Petersburg.
There is a city in Russia which is the most beautiful in the world. If anyone has ever been there only once, he/she will never forget it. I visited it two yeas ago and fell in love with it. It's a great city with an interesting story, friendly inhabitants and beautiful historical places.
St. Petersburg is a city-tale, a city-dream, amusing with its beauty, lay-out of streets, buildings, numerous bridges. It is impossible to list all its advantages.
There is no city in Western Europe with so many rivers, arms and canals with artistically decorated bridges as in St. Petersburg. More than 86 canals and rivers flow through it, but the main river of the city is the Neva. St. Petersburg is a city on water. The city is called the Northern Venice.
St. Petersburg is a historical city. It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great as the 'Window on the West.' In 1917, St. Petersburg, a city of great beauty, with palaces, cathedrals, churches, and government buildings became the capital of Russia.
The history of the city began with the Peter and Paul Fortress, which was built 301 years ago. Today this fortress is one of the most valuable historical and architectural monuments and one of the largest museums. The cathedral struck me with its big columns, magnificent luster and perfectly decorated altar. All the tsars, beginning with Peter I, were buried here. I was greatly astonished when I saw, next to such magnificence, a gray building of a former prison. Its cells were so cold and gloomy that even the air seemed to be heavy. I felt sorry for those prisoners who were locked there.
The main sight of this city is 'Copper horseman' a monument to the founder of St. Petersburg, Peter I. The wreath of laurel leaves on his head symbolizes power. Deep thought and invincible will are expressed in the features of this courageous person. This monument is visited by all guests of St. Petersburg as it is a face of the city.
It is impossible to imagine St. Petersburg without the Hermitage, one of the largest and beautiful museums of the world. A front ladder, a dancing hall, a throne hall, a lot of studies amuses everybody with magnificence and luxury. And how many wonderful paintings! I couldn't believe that I was in the halls where Russian emperors had lived before and I had a great desire to try on all the ladies' dresses of that epoch.
St. Petersburg is indeed a wonderful city; at every turn there is something to catch your eye: the Winter Palace, the Russian Museum, St. Isaac's Cathedral, and the Admiralty building all attract thousands from every corner of the world. But most of all I liked the bridges of St. Petersburg, especially a Bank bridge which is a marvel of engineering skill and decorated with lions with gold wings, a Bridge of kisses and Anetchkov Bridge decorated with horses.
I was sorry to leave St. Petersburg, a remarkable and unique city on the Neva. With great impatience I look forward to visiting it again.
