The World Cup Football extravaganza has captivated everyone. The cricket playing nations are grooming themselves up for the World Cup 2003 at South Africa. American craze for basketball and the nail biting NBA Climaxes needs no introduction. Sports are here, sports are there, and sports are everywhere!

Someone very aptly points it out; “Life by itself is a grand game”. Just like the game of life, other sports too are played by we human beings, and that’s perhaps why sports and games are so popular. We do that everyday! Everybody on this earth is a sportsman and each one of us is a participant in this wicked Game of Life – a game full of highs and lows, a game full of climaxes and a game of nerves. What’s visible in the game today is what we human beings have always been doing - marching ahead, sprinting towards our individual goals, synergizing with our partners and team, facing hurdles, rejections and disappointments. But in the end, everybody plays and everybody has to play! And that’s what sports teach us, to go on and on in one’s pursuit, passing through all thicks and thins and finally achieving the purpose of our lives.

Well, in sports, if the rules of the game are violated, the player is subjected to a penalty. The penalty, in this case, is instant. But in the Game of Life, though the penalties may not be instant, they surely are recorded in the books of The Ultimate Referee. One has to bear the fruits of his doings, whether sweet or sour.

If observed with a greater detail, sports expose us to some of the fundamental teachings about life. Sports teach us to remain “spirited” and carry on, whatever the circumstances. One must never takes eyes off his goals and work persistently towards their realization. Remember Anil Kumble, who, in spite of a fractured jaw continued bowling and shattered the West Indians? A footballer carrying the ball through the opponents always focuses on the goal post. That’s the spirit of sports and perhaps, the spirit of life too!

Sport is all about admitting your mistakes and more importantly, learning from your mistakes. It teaches us to analyze our past mistakes and rectify them for the better conduct. It’s the unending quest for better conduct every time, all the time!

We can’t find any better examples of teamwork, than in sports. Teamwork, which has been a corporate buzzword in the recent times, is prevalent in sports since its inception. Teamwork so profound, that the whole world literally prays for “Beckham and his Boys”. Just as in sports, our fellow counterparts and we are on a mission; a mission to achieve what means most to us. It’s the mission of life.

A sport is all about fair play, hard work, practice, determination and teamwork. So is life. The rules of the game have to be followed and the lessons have to be learnt. And that’s when you win the grand game – the Game of Life.
