Meskerem Birhanu is 20 from Ethiopia. She writes lyrics and is about to release her debut album early September. Most of the melody and the lyrics on her album are written by her.
B: When did you start your music career?
M: I used to go to catholic school for my elementary levels. There was a students’ day that was celebrated once a year and I used to sing on the occasion by imitating famous artists. I was also invited to perform on the same occasion when I was 9th grade student. This time there was another girl with me to perform and we sang a song about the abuse of women. At the time I was singing at a club called SAFFARI, but I stayed there only for two months. Since then I scored good grades on my high school exit examinations and I joined Awasa University (273 km from Addis), where I am currently working my first degree in Foreign Languages and Literature.
B: How do you manage to find the time to work on your music career?
M: When I write the lyrics when something clicks in my mind. When I feel sad or get in some kind of good mood, ideas come to my mind and I write them down. So, finding time isn’t such a problem for me.
B: What does music mean in your life?
M: Music is my life. I express my heartfelt feelings through music. I can communicate with people everywhere in the world through music. I believe that while you are living, you should communicate and express yourself to your community in as many different ways as possible. So, music is a great form of communication for me.
B: How is it possible to cause positive influence in the society through music?
M: I believe well-arranged music and sound lyrics attract people’s attention. Once you get the attention, you can easily and effectively send out your messages. Currently, Ethiopian contemporary music is developing in many aspects. There are dynamic young arrangers emerging. So, we have so many audiences out there. This shows music has the power to make a difference in the society.
B: What is your reaction towards Music Mayday and its objectives and goals?
M: This is really a great opportunity for the youth. The urgent need of our country is development. The powerhouse is the youth. I think there will be challenges in the process. However, I believe this organization can make a great deal out of it because the short cut is artistic approach.
B: How do you like to be connected with Music Mayday?
M: Now I am getting involved in the music industry. I want to be connected in any way possible. This could be festivals or concerts. My field of study is literature; I want to contribute something with this too.
