Miguel López de Legazpi, the Spanish conqueror of the Philippines, founded Manila as a fortified colony in 1571, after defeating the forces of the Muslim ruler Rajah Soliman. In 1601 a seminary for nobles, the first educational institution in the country, was established at Manila by the Jesuits.
From the 16th to early 19th centuries, Manila played an important role in trade as a stopover port for the Manila galleons, huge trading ships that profited greatly from trade between China and Mexico. During this time, Chinese merchants settled in Manila and became middlemen for other trade from China.
By the 1590s the Chinese had become an economically important community. Many Chinese, aware of the political and social advantages enjoyed by the Roman Catholics in the colony, converted to Catholicism and married Filipino women. Many of their mixed-blood descendants became important in Manila.
The city remained under continuous Spanish colonial rule for about 350 years, except for a brief period during the Seven Years' War when Britain held the city from 1762 to 1764. Discontent with Spanish rule among urban Filipinos and some of the Filipino clergy became especially significant in Manila during the latter half of the 19th century. Nationalist sentiment erupted in 1872 when three Filipino priests, who had been charged with leading a military mutiny at an arsenal near Manila, were executed by the Spaniards.
To date, the City capital continues to develop through collaborative efforts of the government and NGOs with of course participation of the youth. While Manila has already tall buildings and infrastructures, it manages to preserve culture within the city. Celebration of fiestas and other traditions remains an emblem of cultural preservation despite development.
Manila is part of the National Capital Region that is composed by more than 10 cities. This region is oftentimes called as the Imperial Manila primarily because it sets the "destiny" of our country. Where Manila goes, the country goes.
Being the center of the all the businesses and trades, Manila is known to have the first airport in Asia. Very unfortunate though that we didn't sustain the development of it. With regards to tourism, our government focuses on regular presentations of regional traditions and culture in a venue through the WOW Philippines Project.

Hello, I am Lorenzo Domingo from the Philippines. I would like to warn all who opened this site not to get hooked on the message of “Dr. JOHN CAMPBELL” if ever he is true. I was nearly a victim of a certain Dr. John Campbell from London. It started when he sent a message on my TAGGED account. He wrote that he needs a nanny for his 6 years old daughter and he is willing to pay 2,500 pounds monthly salary and 100 pounds weekly allowance. He gave his email ad: john_campbell0189@yahoo.com; and his phone: +447035962554. I was actually tempted by the big offer so I emailed him back recommending my 32 years old daughter for the job. He gave the email address of his lawyer and I copy paste my email and Campbell’s email and sent it to his lawyer. The lawyer sent us scanned work agreement form to fill out and told us to scan again and send it back together with the scanned copy of my daughter’s passport. We complied and send it back. And in his respond he sent me a VAF2 UK Visa Form and a work permit form and was asking for 575 pounds for the processing charge when my daughter fill out all the form send the scanned copy together with the scanned copy of the receipt payment through Western Union . That is when suspicion came to my mind. I emailed Dr. Campbell and said that I cannot come out for that amount and ask if he is willing to settle for a salary deduction when my daughter works with him. He said he will pay half of the fee without deducting it from her salary. I agreed and said I have the money but before paying I have searched his email ad through google search and found out that he has more ads on different sites in which he has different address, his profession was a businessman and in me he is a brain surgeon and it came to my mind that he has sent this same message to different people and if this people agreed in paying, even with a small amount, it will be a big amount when sum up. I played around with him and told him that I had an accident and I used the money for the hospital bill and ask him to reconsider his 1st offer and deduct the whole charge on her salary. My respond irritated him and curse me that this accident I am saying will happen to me. I answered him with what I discovered and attached to my email to him what I have searched about him and he categorically denied it. I did not answer him back and think of a better way to stop his evil means. I appeal to you stop this person and not get caught on his web of deception. Thank you and more power to all.
