The US government claims with, of course, impeccable logic that the camp is a success, because the attacks of September 11th have not been repeated. It is “protecting innocent civilians.” On the other hand, Justice Richard Goldstone, the Former Chief Prosecutor for the UN War Crimes Tribunal has termed Guantánamo Bay “unlawful.” He believes that future US Presidents will have to apologise for the blatant breaches of human rights there. Personally, I would not consider this a sufficient response.
It is not just Guantánamo Bay we should be concerned about. There are other holding areas in Afghanistan and in undisclosed locations outside the US, and the US has handed over prisoners to other regimes known for their use of torture during questioning. Prisoners are illegally imprisoned by many governments but Guantánamo Bay is a particularly striking case, especially considering Camp Delta’s motto, displayed upon its gates: “Honour Bound to Protect Freedom.”
