Again, I sit listening to the endless lecture, telling me who I should be. What I should do. Where I should go, and that I should always think about the money, and how to make it. I have heard these words countless times before from nearly every person I know in my life. The adults who think they know what I should do. Go to school, get good grades. Go to University, get good grades. Get a good job, make good money. Get married, have kids, get old and die. Living this life is supposed to make me happy. Yet the notion of it nearly makes me sick. It is just too common; horribly, terribly normal. And exactly what everyone else is doing.

However, I really don't know what else to do. That is the safe path. Where the world is perfect and peaceful, and whenever anything goes wrong, you can watch safely on the TV. From your living room, then tsk tsk the bad guys and go back to reading your romance novel.

I cannot live in such an illusion, the one that you are fed from your first breath. It is not that simple, and the world is not a happy place. There is war, there is dying, there is pain and suffering; and it's hard for some people to ignore. How can I sit here and eat my cheese burger, knowing that some child in the world hasn't eaten for days.

We live to the excess, with comfortable beds and food in the fridge, leading a cushy life, where the most trying part of our day is a traffic jam. At least we know where we are going to get our next meal. There is no doubt that we will live to see another day. Taking our time for granted. Mocking the homeless, running from them, laughing at them. Some taking advantage of the pity they receive. People with good homes and food to eat dress up in crummy clothes and beg for money. Making a good living for themselves, while dooming the truly unfortunate. It is hard to notice sometimes, that not everyone is like us, that for some, it is a struggle just to stay alive from day to day.

There is a select few, who cannot ignore the world. Who cannot go on day to day living with such naivety, getting married, having kids, and worrying about paying the bills? But notice the big picture, and have that need, that hunger to help, to save the world. To ourselves we are normal people, but to the people who look at us as we hand them fresh food and water, we are heroes.

It doesn't take much, just a little effort, a little time and a little of the well sought after money. We can help the helpless, save children, and animals. Feed the hungry and get kids off the street. It doesn't take Superman and some would believe, it just takes a little time and a lot of love.

Writer Profile
Amy Megsin

My name is Amanda. I am 20 year old Canadian, who tends to see things in a slightly different light than others. My poetry and writing bring out the side of myself which is normally tucked away, due to society's training. Without my writing, I would have no outlet, and therefore, would soon cease to be.
