Growing up as a little child, life seemed so meaningless yet so pure. It looked as though life was an angel devoid of complexities. My business then was to see each day along side my little friends (like myself) come and then go. Life to me then was like a baby (that I was), full of hopes and dreams. Life itself was truth free of lies and deception. It was what we made of it in our own small world. As a child, even adults to me were babies that were bigger in size and nothing more. They were bigger friends, not older people.
However as it is said that nothing lasts forever, all these were to change as I grew older. The difficulties of life and the problems faced by man started hunting me like an antelope being chased by a hungry lion for supper. Things started changing dramatically. The same human being which seemed so pure was now gutted with stains of insincerity to his fellow man. The same man who was a friend thus changes into a total stranger. The same man who seemed so pure was now covered with the impurities of greed, hunger for power and oppressive intuitions.
For these reasons, I have been very curious. My curiosity stems from the fact that I decided to find the cause of the changes. But funny enough instead of getting the answer to my worries, all I got was uncertainty, bitterness and anger.
The more I tried to find answers, the more injustice reared its ugly head. The more I searched, the more selfishness on every side tried to make me give in. And in trying to move away from selfishness, murder, slander, gossips, hatred, jealousy and more would distract my attention. And in a more confused state, I lowered my head in defeat and started to move away into isolation. On my journey into the land of my own world, some words aimed at encouraging me crept into my head. Some of the words included the following:
It is not about defeat, it is about hope. It is not about anger, it is about peace. It is not about power, it is about grace. It is not about knowing your enemy and other people, it is about knowing yourself. It is not just about the here and now, It also include the here after.
Not satisfied with these words, I began to ask the imaginary speaker some questions based on the spoken words. And my thoughts went like this:
What hope is there for the innocent little virgin raped by some wicked HIV/AID victim in South Africa because of some superstitious beliefs? How can there be hope for her with the global conspiracy aimed at eliminating Africans by bringing some anti-retroviral drugs as against drugs that are meant to cure her?
How can there be peace in the middle-east, when there is no justice? How can there be peace, when Israel and other Arab states have their nations and the question of the Palestinian state remains hanging?
What is grace to the Ethiopian child dying of starvation and mal-nourishment, while his leaders enjoy all the assistance meant for him or her?
How can the youth of the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, know themselves, when the oil companies and the government are stealing his source of joy? Can there be dignity in his vocabulary when he is suffering in the midst of plenty? He gropes in darkness in his little hamlet and sees the paradise of the oil company milking his land indiscriminately, kilometres away and you expect him to know himself.
Again, how can the ‘after’ of the world be accepted by a young westerner whose freedom is limitless and knows no bounds and therefore sees homosexuality as the greatest thing that has ever happened to him or her? How can he or she asks his or herself; if my parents had engaged in this, would I have been in this world? He or she can never ponder on such issues when statutory provisions are provided for him or her.
Having asked all these questions, I got no answer to any of them. This therefore left me confused more than ever. And for this reason, my head still remains entangled in the state of lowliness and motionlessness. Perhaps if anyone can provide me with the answer to one more question just may be I will be a little bit elated. And my question is; can the world ever be a better place?

The Futility of Life. Olumide Olaniyan |
Mr. Enefe has been able to make me think of all the troubles and problems of community or communities. There is no individual without some challenges; and the sum total of individual's chalenges are the challeges of the community. My conclusion is problems confronting mankind must and will be solved only by mankind.
Let us all keep hope alive.
