Violence against women is very common. According to Webster’s dictionary, "violence" means the physical force used to damage or destroy as distortion or alteration. "Woman" is defined as an adult human female, a female attendant or servant. Violence against women includes assaults, abuse and even sexism.

The risk of sexual assault and abuse for girls and women is high. Girls have a greater risk of being assaulted and abused than boys. Studies show that women are two to three times more likely to be sexually abused and young girls are at an even greater risk of being physically assaulted and murdered than older women. Females between the ages of 18-24 are assaulted by their first dates. That is 24% of females and it is 50% greater than the average. 125 of Canadian females between the ages of 18-24 have at least one incident with their spouse and girls ages 15-19 are more likely to be killed than older women. Females in communities barely accept them (marginal) are in risk of violence. The rate of disabled women or girls being sexually abused is 4x the national average. Reporting assaults and abuse include the following: being followed, obscene phone calls, being flashed, sexually harasses, threatened etc…

In society, many youths think there is no equality. Many of them who think that are young women in particular. Those people face discrimination and employment demographics can tell. The statistics reflect discrimination. Some actions that reflect from the statistics are stereotypes, social convention, myths etc. In the employment group, women receive 30-40% less pay than men. Since equality is such a big part of society, a law has been enforcing from the Charter of Rights and Responsibilities. This way, there is less likely for anyone to become victims or perpetrators.

Although women are not treated equally in society, there is a special day for women. It is called International Women’s Day. The main purpose behind International Women’s Day is to celebrate and recognize the peace and social progress. This special occasion is to acknowledge the contribution those women have put in now. The revision of the women includes how women have struggled for peace, equality and development. Girls in developing countries receive poor education, but some receive better education as well as health care. Comparing to the past, the participation in society in the workplace, work participation for women has increase. Unfortunately, some things never change. Women and men are not being treated as equals. 1.3 billion of women worldwide are poor. The purpose of Women’s day is to acknowledge what women have done and learn what we can do to help them reach their destination for equality and peace. Although it is a one day celebration, it should last all year.

Violence against women is wrong. Everyone should be equal whether you are a male or female. Women have gone through many challenges to achieve their goal for equality and peace including overcoming assaults and abuse. To recognize these women, there is International Women’s Day.
