The yuletide season has a very straight forward definition, although there has been so many stories put forward regarding the season. Christmas, according to the international edition of the Webster’s Dictionary, is simply the annual festival observed by Christians on December 25, commemorating the birth of Christ. But for a very long period of time, there has been so much controversy surrounding the date of the birth of Christ. The controversies vary according to the beliefs and orientation which people have developed over time. The reason for the controversies ultimately stems from the fact that nobody can surely say that December 25, or any other day is actually the day Jesus Christ was born.
Historians have traced the Yuletide season to the celebration of Saturn, the Sun god, long before Christ was born. Although no one can be certain of Christ’s birth date, the date of the celebration of the sun god has been placed between Dec.17 and Dec. 25th. Therefore since the exact date of the festivity of the sun god is more certain, it can be said that the birth of Christ made to be around that time as to replace the celebration of Saturn with Christmas.
In today’s world, not many people can tell the tale of Saturn and its celebration. But all over the world almost everybody acknowledges this date as the birth date of Jesus Christ. For this reason it can be said that which ever celebration an individual chooses to uphold at this period is up to the person. Controversy need not arise.
I am a Christian and I understand the deep rooted tenets of Christmas and it is for this that I want to celebrate Christmas. For anyone who chooses to celebrate any other god at this time, that person has his or her rights to celebrate whatever he or she so chooses. So, it is not needful to begin to make the celebration of Christ controversial when it is not needed.
Having read so many write-ups on this subject it has become imperative or a sine qua for me to state at this point that as Christians, our belief in salvation is a personal issue and should be left as such. As proud Christians, we should begin to use the yuletide season to make others see the importance of Christianity in the way in which we chose to behave and act at this period.
Rather than engage in an unnecessary argument regarding the tentative date of Christmas, we should teach people how to live, by the way we live our lives. It is not coincidental that the date of the celebration of the birth of Christ was fixed towards the end of the year. The end of the year should be a time for taking stock of one’s life throughout that year. Engaging in debates regarding which date is tentative concerning the birth of the sun god and Jesus Christ, is unnecessary.
Be you a Hindu, a Buddhist, a Christian, a Muslim or whatever, the question should not be whether this date should be a time for celebrating whoever or whatever; but should be a period to ask ourselves; “how have I lived my life in the past year?” Christ lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation. And it is God’s gift to man that he was born at this time. Let all of us try to understand His teachings and follow the principles of His teachings, rather than engage in unworthy debates.
