This is the end.
He walks alone
All by he-self
On his way, out.

This is the end.
He walks alone,
His imperial thoughts
And policies with him.

This is the end.
Out with the pale grey,
in with the darker
shade of view.

This is the end
of the great nightmare.
Forward to the new:
The moment has arrived.

Whose (American) dream
Will it be
This time around?

Whose American dream
Will be visited
Upon us all
This time around?

Whose American dream
Has come to you
From out Africa-way?

Whose American dream,
Traced from slavery
To Martin Luther King (at last)
To this new age?

Will your freedom reign
This time around?

The Forty-fourth president
(And male, to boot)
Of the United States,
So-called by those
Who wave its flag.

The Forty-fourth president,
Though the very first
Of a darker shade
Of political persuasion
(Still, male, to boot).

The Forty-fourth president
Will be compared
To those who
Waged war before (him).

The Forty-fourth president
Might be the first
To let freedom reign
And all be equal
(Be he still male, to boot).

Is Big Brother
(Done with us)
Out here in the dark
Of Africa and beyond
(notwithstanding Eskom)?

Is Big Brother done with us,
Over and out,
Or just disguised
As a darker brother-leader?

Is Big Brother done with us,
Done with us
And done with the America
Of the too recent past?

Are we free, at last?

Pinch me moments
Have been many
Before today's inauguration
Of the USA's Barack H Obama.

Pinch me moments:
When the idiot box
Made its debut here
(The great propaganda box).

Pinch me moments:
Out there on the moon.
(Has any woman been?)

Pinch me moments:
Us in the voting queue, 1994;
Folk of all shades
Of political view.

Pinch me moments:
The White House imbued,
Now with an African-American
Darkening its lawns.

Pinch me moments…

'Pinch me moments' comes to us courtesy of Judge Albie Sachs, speaking at a fancy function at Monte Casino, Johannesburg.
