If I were a Good Poet Printable Version PRINTABLE VERSION
by Ayo Morakinyo, Nigeria Oct 25, 2008
Media , Culture , Peace & Conflict   Poetry

If I were a good leader, I would show example
If I were a writer, I would write wisdom
If I were a teacher, I would teach truths
If I were an artist, I would create beauty
If I were an engineer, I would improve living
If I were a nurse, I would show sacrifice
If I were a lawyer, I would ensure justice
If I were a policeman, I would maintain order
If I were a trader, I would sell ideas
If I were a builder, I would promote standards
But if I were a poet, I would pen down all of them,
I would impress golden values on all willing hearts
If I were a poet, I would instruct good counsel,
I would commend all who give back to humanity;
All who have shown kindness to humanity and our environment,
Those who have held to right
When wrong was an attractive and tempting offer
They will never be forgotten by my ink and paper
So if you are one of them, kudos to you!
Thanks for making Nigeria’s future your responsibility
But, don’t ever receive my thanks except
If I, myself, were a good poet.
