This piece is dedicated to all who care for the sick, those despite the odds and ordeals of attending to the sick and the dying stand chivalrously to the end. With tears of awe, I honour you….

I could still see the gloom
That clouded her face
The moment I shouted on her
And cursed as if she were the cause
I caught cold and was dying

Deeply hurt but didn’t halt
And there was something about her
Her smiles even while I sighed
Her presence in my stuffy room
Her soft persuasion I took my prescription
Her prayers I catch my breath

And I caught my breath and health
Because someone cared selfishly
That’s why I know that somewhere
Someone is there by somebody
Who is sick, bedridden or dying

Burning like candle in the wind
In the wind of bearing all disgust
In the wind of carrying shit and urine
In cleansing the stenches of sickness
In the bearing of all irritations

There is something awesome about you
A marvel about your life and love
That you walk out of your way
And stay around even when it hurts
Even when you would want to go
You stay, being there Oh my God!
Like candle burning away in the wind

You stay even when you’re not appreciated
You stay even when you’re called names
You stay even when you’re slighted
You stay even when it gets worse
You stay even when there seems no hope
You stay even when tears overflow and run
You stay, Oh my God!

So I pray He blesses your pains with joy
That you see him hale and hearty again
May the good God grant you health and wealth
May He who sees in secret bless your heart’s desires
May He give you consolation too when need be
Above all may evil not come near you
For there’s something awesome about you
