Congratulations to you, my fellow advocates all around the world. How was last month? I hope it was splendid, exciting. I hope that this month will give us ample opportunity to make a greater impact in our world. To those who have been responding to my mails. I say a very big thank you.

My piece this month is informed by seminars, conferences, symposia carried out by fellow advocates, most especially young people. I am often excited when fellow advocates are doing something somewhere, and when I am invited to come in my capacity as a journalist and social advocate. When I get the chance, I am always quick to attend the programme.

However, what incites me often, when I attend these programmes is that I hear the same thing again and again- statements like “Discover your purpose,” “Dare to be different,” “Be what you want to be,” “Rule your world.” But the campaigners for these statements often do not match their words with the desired action to make these changes.

I believe that we have youth across the continent of Africa who have dreams and aspirations, but are in dire need of a helping hand which goes beyond the “grammar” we speak as advocators. What they need is someone to mentor and tutor them toward achieving their goals in life, someone who can help by sparing a little of his/ her money to help them, say, purchase some examination forms or get connected to some vocational training. Such a gesture would no doubt give the youth a new lease of life. After all, everybody aspires to be great, but owing to limited opportunities, these dreams are often left unrealised.

Just like my friend and fellow advocate, Joseph Mojume, the President of Leap Africa, Alumni, told me recently in a discussion, many of us are not sincere in our advocacy efforts. We all talk, but few of us commit to action. I have sold my name and career to get 22 people employed in my company (Nokia, Nigeria) all because I have decided to walk my talk and make Africa great again. For the record, I support seminars, symposium, and the likes but the fulcrum of our activities must transcend this level.

Once again I implore that we pray together, encourage one another and network until the desired change is achieved in every home, street, market place, Motor Park, school, campus, community and state, and in the nation-at-large.

Thanks,
Adeola Ogunlade,
Co-ordinator,
Youth Advocate for Change (YAC).
