| Children in Africa ought to be given more attention. Implemented policies are needed to make life worth living for them, especially the underprivileged orphans and venerable children. The ministry of women affairs and child development, a government in my country, is making efforts to see that the OVC are given their due place in the society which is free education. Clothing and shelter and a right to other necessities of life are given but the pace is slow considering the enormity of the problem on ground: child prostitution, child trafficking, enormous hunger and poverty, illiteracy, HIV/ AIDS, child slavery and the list goes on and on. The ministry is at the point of collecting data to have an idea of how many OVC's are in the country. That is considerably slow considering how long the problem has been, but at least something is being done at last. It is heart breaking to see children in who are suffering intensely and we are not able to do anything. I'm an orphan. I was orphaned at the age nine. Life has been unstable with no sense of purpose at all. Nigeria is not a country with foster homes and functional welfare homes; the homes are few and most times it is better to be on the streets than to be in the homes. Policies are set here with no implementation. Someone once said that Nigeria has one of the best written down laws and policies but the worst implementation. Orphans in Nigeria depend on relatives whom most times don't care about them. They just want them for house chores. For me, I wanted to have education and I have not obtained it. I think if talents are nurtured in these OVC's, it will go a long way to bettering their lives. I have always had the vision of creating a platform where children's talents can be nurtured. The project is called nurturing young talent and is based on entertainment. I strongly believe this project would go a long way in giving children, especially the under underprivileged children, a sense of self worth; which is important because if they have self worth, things would one way or the other fall into place as they grow into adulthood. I lacked self worth for a long time in my life and will love to give children the opportunity to fantasize, dream big and become stars. If one person from this project becomes a star then indeed the purpose is achieved. I need support. « return. |
