PARTNERSHIPS AT COMMUNITY AID ABROAD

Relationships:

Internal relationships are a primary focus. – Relationships inside the organisation are incredibly important. They are foundations for external relationships.

Early external relationships are built on sponsorship and funding/resources exchange.

Partnerships:

A partnerships is a relationship built on more than just "one body being the giver and one being the receiver."

So how can we do this?

“We want to be with you in building a fairer world” – The speaker describes the 'baggage' associated with this 'built' concept.

- This must translate into real language that can be communicated internationally across geographical boundaries and social and cultural boundaries.

...

What is the seed for the growth of an organization?

Passion – Personal or shared.
Goal – issue based, active or reactive.
Leadership – Elected or asserted.
Dedication and Energy.

...

Speaking on experiences 'in the field':

How do you come to a village? Stand in their shoes and see through their eyes? – It is a 'Micro Processes'.

“You cant bring development in. It is a process that people undergo themselves, about being something different from where they started.”

It isn't a straight forward process

Not a linear process, there are problems, unforseen and otherwise. – eg. ( In a Bangladesh village Co-op, The Secretary ran off with all the money. ) – This process is not a romantic journey that always has pretty outcomes.

What is the key to success? How does CAA operate successfully?

CAA act as an instigator and perpetual motivating force.

“A worm that gets inside and drives them on.” ( Working with people and being in partnership and understanding the importance of cooperation )

So what does CAA bring?

Resource Exchange – ( less and less so these days as 3rd world countries become bigger and better at what they are doing, running their own programs and finding their own funding )

"What is it that they need? What can we bring (with a concept of development honed over years in the field) to make the journey easier?"

Partnership is a key component in community development.

“Community development is a process, about accessing and building resources. Finding resources in the community and sharing them equably, about working with the total community to achieve what you want to achieve.”

...

Outcome Driven vs Perpetual Relationships:

As globalisation takes hold, programs are becoming ‘outcome driven’ eg - “Operating in the field for 3 years and then moving out.”

However, the preferred model sees the organisation staying with the community as long as is needed. Training villagers to become organisation workers / representatives acting as forces for change in place of CAA. Thus making the process self sustaining.

This is the key to success!
