| “Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” - Warren Buffet This interesting quote came from richest person in the world today, Warren Buffet, who said he would give 85% of his fortune to charity (around $37 billion of his $44 billion fortune) which was considered as one of the largest acts of charitable giving in United States history. One of these five foundations to benefit from this gesture is the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation. In my opinion, his decision to undertake such a huge charitable act was influenced by this quote: he clearly wanted to be the “man who planted a tree a long time ago.” But what is the connection of this quote to my vision? The answer is quite simple: The quote talks about the vision and action of one man (the man who planted the tree) and its result (someone sitting on the shade), it also talked about ‘planting a tree’, which in my opinion suggests creating a sustainable environment. As long as we have memories: it is important for us to remember the past, as without the thoughts and actions of yesterday there would be no learning and no opportunity to learn from our mistakes and successes. As long as we have hope: it is imperative that we as youth hold onto our dreams in the future, If we want a tomorrow with no poverty and 100% literacy, this is our responsibility. As long as we have friendship: yes there is history in every country that could have been tackled in a more appropriate way, and yes there are living standards to be improved all over the world, but we mustn’t forget that although we have these problems, today is beautiful, whilst striving for our dreams for the future and concentrating on improving the negatives, it is important to also remember and acknowledge the positives: our friends, our family and how far the world has already come. « return. |
