He was born yesterday and today became a man.
He slipped away from my life without a word.
He makes his own rules and regulations.
He does not need me anymore.
He cannot be told anything anymore.
He does not listen to reason.
He does as he pleases.
He disobeys my guidance.
He tells me, “Mama, I am a man now.”
I was awoken by the police in the middle of the night.
They showed me a photo and asked if I knew the man.
I could not respond. I wondered, “What has happened to the son?”
I wondered, “Where did the son go?”
I heard a knock on my door in the early hours of the morning.
When I looked outside I saw a group of young men with hard faces.
I opened the door and was asked where he was.
I did not know where he was, the son never tells me what he does.
It is Sunday; I am cooking a meal and through my door walks a young woman.
She is carrying a small case and with her is a little boy.
She has come to leave the boy with the son who’s nowhere to be found.
She is in tears; she does not want to discuss it; she has had enough of my son.
“Why my son, why are you making Mama cry?
Why are you giving Mama such grief?
Why do I feel like I do not know you anymore?
What happened to create this change in you?
What did Mama do to make you turn out the way you did?”
I love the son;
I gave the son my world;
I sacrificed for the son.
Why did the son disobey me?
Where did the son go?
Did I do something wrong?
Did I miss something in the son’s life?
I cannot remember no matter how hard I try.
All I know is the son is not the son anymore.
The son has his own mind;
The son is destroying his life
And I do not know what to do.
I wish I could get the son back, my son.
I miss the son, I miss my son.

"Where did the son go" was inspired by people and how they respond to situations. I made an assessment about life styles and how they affect us as we grow older. One minute you have a baby the next it is a fully matured person who now has a mind of their own. This poems intends to say as long as we have parents we will always remain children in their eyes and we have to respect that.
