“Pay attention! Left-right-left-right, Stop! You guys aren’t getting anywhere” my eardrums were about to explode. I had the worst headache in the history of headaches and I was not in the mood for orders. “Pay attention” the major called yet again. I must point out that when I say major, I really mean Mrs. Pansy. During band practice, Mrs. Pansy never wanted to be called by her real name. “It’s too soft” she had once said. She did not even want to be there. She often made no effort in hiding her feelings towards tutoring us. On days when she felt like meeting halfway she would shriek, “Pay attention and I’ll pretend I wouldn’t rather be half naked on a beach in Hawaii”
I wanted to ditch this practice so bad it hurt. The heat from the sun was so intense and added to our heavy band uniforms and the action of drumming contributed highly to the headache. We had been practicing for so long that I had forgotten where the drum sticks started and where my fingertips ended. I could, however, remember the time when I first held these sticks. I had come home one day and the drum had just been waiting for me on my bed.
“Okay soldiers” I wished Mrs. Pansy would give it up. We weren’t in the army. “5 minute brake but after you’ll all have to pay attention” it was such a relief like all my Christmas days had come at once. I ran into the locker room and fumbled around for some painkillers to soothe my skull splitting migraine. Instead I found an Oreo and my overdue school fees. “Oh no, School fees” I sad to myself, they were meant to be in a while ago.
I could hear Mrs. Pansy beginning to round people up again. “Time to pay attention” she roared over and over until I was the only one not there. Mrs. Pansy was heading for the locker rooms. I could tell. “What’s the hold up?” she asked. Just then, at that precise moment I conjured up a plan.
Subtlety (but no as discreetly as one would of hoped) I dropped the Oreo onto the bench next to Mrs. Pansy. Did she understand? “There’s no time for mucking around! You need to pay attention” I had one more shot. I dropped the cheque on the ground between my feet and hers. Her eyes glowed like embers. “You dropped something” her voice echoed in the empty room. “No I didn’t” I replied, “yes you did, on the floor” she interjected, “no I didn’t” I denied as I winked so boldly that I thought she was going to laugh.
She hesitated then picked up the paper form the floor. A smile crept itself across her face. “Maybe you should take a brake from band for a while” I had waited so long to hear those words. I nodded. She turned and paced down the hallway. She was nearly out of sight when I heard her say faintly “I hear Hawaii is particularly good this time of year” I had finally reached my goal and everyone’s expectation. I was paying attention.
