Values Clarification
Beloved, values clarification is an important segment of life skills, I would recommend that you pay great attention so that you will be able to benefit from it.
“ If your values do not develop with your age, you are liable to become a future beggar. Not really begging for food, but begging for values”
Values define those things we attach worth and hold dear to, in other words: values are things, which we cannot easily let go or compromise with.
Your values determine the decision you make (your mind set) and your decisions or mind set determines your behaviour (life set).
It is therefore necessary that you clarify your values in life. Not just any kind of values, but useful, helpful and positive ones. When you are deficient of well-defined values, you are liable to become more susceptible to peer-pressure especially when it comes to vital issues like sexual choices, drug abuse including the goals you pursue in life.
Classification of Values
Values can be classified into two segments, thus we have Tangible values and Intangible values.
· Tangible values are those values, which can be seen, touched and felt, in other words, they are physical values. Examples of tangible values include; cars, dresses food, etc.
· Intangible values are the opposite of tangible ones they are those ones that cannot be seen felt or touched. Examples of such values include, honesty, love, and education etc.
How do our values affect us?
· For tangible values: person who takes food to be his most important tangible value will be ready to undo anything in other to pursue food. That is why we keep on experiencing certain misconducts in public functions and ceremony. But what is a man whose duty is to eat and sleep?
· Considering intangible values, a young person or student who prefers honesty and hard work will take enough time to prepare for examinations and will refuse to cheat even if he is given the opportunity to do so, but some other person who do not share such values will be ready to cheat even if the questions are as simple as anything simple.
How then can you improve your values
There is a saying by John Mason that “the real you that you are is determined by the kind of company you keep and the books you read”. If you read some stories and books from the most decently successful people in the world and motivational speakers, such as John Mason Jim Rohn, Ben Carson, T. D. Jakes and the rest, it will help you to increase and build up your values.
· Also if you are wise in choosing your friends, they can help you in reaching for high standard values and in pursuing good goals in life.
· There is nothing that you can do without God. All that has been said cannot be achieved by power or by might, remember, the Bible says, “by strength shall no man prevail”. I was motivated when I read Paul’s letter in Romans 12:2 from the Contemporary English Version, it reads “ do not be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think….” If only you can humble yourself to the point of just praying to God that he change your mind set and give you the grace to choose right values, he is faithful to grant you the grace.
All have been said, the ball is now left in your own court, it is left for you to decide either to choose and build up your values and live a brighter life or remain deficient of values. I would recommend that you choose the former so that it will be good for you.
