Beyond the mountains
caged like an animal
in one corner of the world
with only a longing in the heart
and a barefoot prayer
you came home
at night
to be nestled in a cradle of love.

You looked at the African night sky
imagined a sun of slavery setting
and understood why
you had to come home.

Welcome home “Hottentot Venus”
poetry has brought you back.

Today the heavens open up
as you walk free
from a forest of slavery
and releasing tears like a tree
shedding its seeds.

Now, Khoisan queen
the mountains will embrace you
the rustle of the rivers soothe you,
and you will heal all women’s wounds
and this nation’s pride
when your remains are scattered
in full view of the African sun.
