Media   Short Stories

In a cold winter afternoon, I was in my usual weekend hurry to catch the 3:10 pm train to Alexandria, departing from the main Cairo railway station. It was almost 2:45 pm and I was still in Ad Duqqi underground metro station, 6 stations away from my destination. Meanwhile, I was carrying a heavy bag, whose weight is in a way or another proportional to the period I had planned to stay in my hometown, during the mid-year vacations.

After cutting my way with my lifts through the crowds in the underground metro, then the Ramses square, and finally on the railway quay, I was finally able to locate my seat in wagon # 8, at nearly 3:00 pm.

As usual in Egypt these days, the train did not leave on time; instead of the proposed 3:10 pm departure time, the train left at 3:35 pm....

Amazingly, my central point in this story lies in those 25 minutes.....when I was sitting next to the train window, watching an old man washing the ground excessively with a water jet. I immediately began to think about how in Egypt water is not so much given proper respect....and how is it wasted in vain.

After the old man performed his job, he left the scene, but after having created a small water spot in a low-elevated part of the sidewalk he had already washed. Few seconds later, a pigeon landed near the small water spot, and from the enthusiastic way in which it was drinking, it was easily to notice the amount of thirst this little bird had been experiencing.

After the pigeon became no more thirsty, it pointed its sight towards the top of a lighting tower, and promptly flew towards it. On the top of this lighting tower, where another pigeon was initially standing, the first pigeon landed, and both pigeons started to "communicate". After just few seconds, both pigeons flew towards the water spot, but this time the new pigeon was the one that started drinking and drinking.....

This simple scene just stimulated me to communicate it to everybody!
