Frequently Asked Questions

What is TIGed?

TIGed is a new set of teacher and student tools to help better integrate TakingITGlobal.org into classrooms around the world. Using TIGed, teachers and students can draw on the content and network of youth who use TakingITGlobal without necessarily having to interact on the public site. Classrooms from around the world can collaborate on projects that fit into local curriculum. Teachers can draw inspiration for activities from the Activity Database, and support each other in our teacher discussion groups.

Who should use TIGed?

  • Teacher who are interested in TakingITGlobal but need guidance or ideas on how it fits into the classroom.
  • Teachers who are interested in TakingITGlobal but need more control over the environment and/or need stronger privacy protection for their students than the public community provides.
  • Teachers who want their students to interact with their peers from around the world to gain a new perspective on the world or improve cross-cultural communications skills.
You do not need to be operating in a one-to-one computer environment for TIGed to be of use. Whether you have occasional access to labs, a handful of computers in your class, or simply a computer and projector, there are ways for you to make use of TIGed.

Do I have to join TakingITGlobal to use TIGed?

To take full advantage of TIGed's tools, you must become a TIG member. TakingITGlobal.org membership is free, takes seconds, and does not require you to make any personal information public. You can complete both signup process at the same time here.

How does TIGed protect my students' privacy?

Normally, when members sign up for TakingITGlobal.org, they have the option of creating a public profile with a full biography and the ability to add contact information. We've restricted profiles for any student members under the age of 18. Outside of their classrooms, only basic display name (not their real name), age, and country will be shown. Within classrooms, students may choose to complete a full profile that will be accessible only to their teachers and classmates.

Teachers can also choose to make their classrooms public or private. Public classrooms are accessible to anyone with a link (for viewing--only class members may edit), wheras private classrooms can only be viewed by students and teachers who have been given an access code and are logged into their TIG accounts.

I'm already a TIG member. How does using TIGed affect my membership?

If you are a teachers, joining TIGed will only add to the features available to you. You will be able to create and control your own classrooms, and join those created by others.

If you are a student and under the age of 18, your normal TIG profile will be hidden as long as you are part of a class. You will regain your complete profile once your class ends.

If you are a student over the age of 18, your TIG profile will be unaffected.

Is TIGed available in my language?

Initially TIGed will only be available in English. As we grow, TIGed will be available in all the same languages as TakingITGlobal.org: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic and Chinese. We anticipate that French and Spanish will be complete by Fall 2006.

Does TIGed link to curriculum standards?

Many of the activities in the Activity Database are linked to specific curriculum standards, using McREL's Compendium of Standards and Benchmarks. However, they may not be linked to your local standards. Every activity should, however, be flexible enough to fit into your own circumstances. Remember: the Activity Database is full of teacher created content, and you can submit your own suggestions!

How do I get started?

The first step is to join a school. Go to TIGed.org and click on "Register" in the "Are you a teacher?" box. You will be guided through the simple registration process, after which you will have the ability to create and join classes and access the Activity Database.

Are there any fees?

Yes. TIGed is a complex system that took a lot of staff time to develop and maintain. To ensure TIGed's sustainability, we are implementing the following fees, as of January 1, 2006, for access to TIGed's virtual classrooms, activity database, and teacher discussion boards.
