TIGed Contest

Science and Global Education

From Davina, a teacher candidate and intern at TakingITGlobal:

AYITI Game What is Science & Global Education? We often hear people refer to Science and Global Education as two discrete fields of study. Science is everywhere! Global issues are all around us! As teachers of science, our role is to link the science learned in the classroom to the science of the world. By effectively integrating global issues into our science lessons we are contributing to the development of global citizens who will know how to use inquiry, collaboration, and critical thinking to solve challenges and develop new innovations.

Whether you directly link science research and discoveries made in developing countries to developed countries; connect chemical reactions seen in the lab to technology of the past, present and future; discuss consumerism, funding and politics alongside science research; or expose your students to media literacy and the science found in the local newspaper, the possibilities are endless! A science teacher's primary objective should be to link every lesson with global perspectives.

How do we do that?

TakingITGlobal offers a medium where science educators can share ideas and resources on making their science lessons a global experience. Similar to the nature of science and discovery, we need to collaborate to build a bank of activities and resources.

Contribute your ideas & resources to our Activity Database or simply send it to education@takingitglobal.org. You can also post ideas for collaborative science projects in TIGed's Educator Central.

Opportunity for US High School Students - deadline coming up!

Asia SocietyThe 2007 Goldman Sachs Foundation Youth Prize for Excellence in International Education is a competition that asks high school students to select a problem or challenge that affects their local community as well as a community outside the United States; to create an in-depth written, audio, video, or animated feature that compares and contrasts how these two communities have addressed the issue; and to explain why these approaches reflect the different cultural backgrounds of those involved, and what lessons the different communities could learn from each other. Five winners will be selected and will receive up to $10,000 each as well as an all-expense paid trip to New York City in early November 2007 where they will be recognized at Asia Society's Gala Annual Dinner.

Please visit http://askasia.org/students/gsfprizes.html for the contest question, guidelines, eligibility rules, and online application. Deadline is June 11, 2007.
