What is it?
The Commission for Social Development (CSocD) is a functional commission of ECOSOC. It consists of 46 member states. The Commission’s responsibility has been the follow-up and implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and Programme of Action. It meets yearly in the New York Headquarters of the UN. There are also NGO sponsored side events alongside the Commission.
Why is it important to young people?
The purpose of the CSocD is to improve the quality of life and provide a voice for individuals the world over whose lives are mired in poverty and exclusion. Young people are just as affected by poverty as the older generations, therefore it is just as important that they work to eradicate poverty. This commission is also the place in the UN where youth policies such as the World Program of Action for Youth (WPAY) are discussed.
How can young people get involved?
Young people are able to follow the discussions that are occurring in the CSocD by visiting the website. There it is possible to read the remarks made and any resolutions or outcomes to the debate.
