Making Trade Fair by David Taylor, United Kingdom
There can be no doubt that unless there is urgent action we are going to fail to reach the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. This year, 2005, offers a once in a life time opportunity to take that action. Across the world, millions of people are joining what could be the biggest ever social movement for change. No longer are they willing to allow 30,000 people to die...

Triple ‘F’: Setting the Pace for a Sustainable Africa by charlton c tsodzo, Zimbabwe
It is not everyday that one gets to meet up with such a zealous larger-than-life character so full of zest and passion for youth participation in African development. It gets even better when such a bundle of energy is a rare combination of beauty and brains, down to mother earth and disposed to share their vision with any other young person they suspect to be...

This Time No Excuse! by Wolfgang Gründinger, Germany
Nearly five years have already passed since the leaders of the world pledged to implement the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to provide the people of the world “freedom from fear and want.” They signed to implement eight major Goals by 2015. In September 2005, the world leaders will meet again in New York to review the progress they have made regarding their...

Silhouettes of neglect by Dmitriy Kokarev, Lebanon
Step into their world
See their lives ruined, shattered and left to rust
Since the early days and up until today
Mere objects of possession in the hands of men
Another trophy on their wall of insecurity and doubt
A vase on display filled with what they think is suitable and right
The lower sex through eyes of...

Participation = Democracy = Development by Manish Thapa, Nepal
If one carried out a survey among all women and men of Nepal asking them the question, “What are the two highest priorities for you personally and for the nation,” the vast majority would probably say “peace and development.” Peace and development are two sides of the same coin. Without peace there can be no development and without development, no peace. ...

Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger in the Arab world: Is there hope? by May Fawaz, Lebanon
In her account on famine in Sudan, CNN correspondent Catherine Bond reported about a girl named Aduta Aboim, who walked miles with her parents and two brothers to Ajeip, a campground in the south of the country, where more than 7000 malnourished Sudanese gather waiting to be fed. When Aduta reached Ajeip, it had already been satiated with imploring hungry men, women and...

Ukraine: Fertile Ground for Millennium Campaign by Olexi, Ukraine
When I proposed a report about the UN-organized All-Ukrainian Youth Summit to the “Young Ukraine” newsletter in July 2004, I received a sharp, growling reply, saying “Why on Earth, should we cover a UN youth-oriented PR action, when the mature UN officials are inept, connive at US operations in Iraq and limited to help Ukraine monitoring yearly summits and...

Youth Implementing MDGs in Senegal: Dream or Reality? by Latif M'bengue, Senegal
Senegalese Youth and MDG as a thematic
At first sight, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) might mean nothing to the majority of Senegalese youth. 2/3 of the youth I have questioned, answered that they have no idea about it, or they have a vague knowledge of the MDGs - and none of them know about the Millennium Campaign. Myself, I have to...

Comme plusieurs autres pays en voie de développement, le Cameroun ambitionne de réduire de moitié la pauvreté d’ici 2015.
