| One of the saddest truths of our era
Is millions of women around the world
Trying to fit a certain criteria
A deception they feel obligated to hold
Sacrificing financial savings and health
In order to have cosmetic surgery
In a desperate attempt to meet up to a myth
An unrealistic standard of beauty
Appearance have been so stressed
That individual values counts as almost nothing
The “modern” women are being assessed
On the basis of physical traits, jewelry and clothing
Have noticed that those who fit the criterion
Find it easier to get the job or position
Even though if they have the proper qualification
That’s why there is constant competition
Everyone sizing up one another
Making everyone abide to a certain measure
If you don’t posses the “right” manifestation
What else is there for a woman to do?
You are going to have to make a few modifications
Women in this civilization
Are so ruined
Loss of the self, the person
Allowing her self to be manipulated
Vulnerable because of her femininity
Exploited of her individuality
Lack of confidence and self esteem
Admitting to how others say for her to be
This is truly one of the saddest truths of our time
All these beautiful beings suffering to meet an impractical standard of beauty

For friend saying that wine... Ahmed Haroon
| Aug 21st, 2005
It is known as bad in cold and hot places as well, it is dangerous to health, it makes you fat, it makes you ill, it makes you unbearable, it makes you unconscious; like animals, thinking just for satisfaction. Satisfaction is good but not in everything.

On the 15th line, I meant to say "Even though they don't poses the proper qualification."

You want to criticize the way of present life style of women and your poem denotes that all of the women are foolish as they are expending their money for cosmetic.
One thing you must consider that, cosmetic makes them feel good. Satisfaction is anything worth buying in this world. You’re satisfied with your Hijab and not having cosmetic, the others are with beautifying materials. And beautification of mind and body is not harmful for other. You can’t say that who is physically beautiful is not beautiful in mind. In your opinion you will say that, it is harmful for women themselves is not true. It depends on social culture of a country, values and norms they have learnt by heredity and educational systems. In your value system (Islam) you learnt that drinking wine is bad, but the other value system relatively in cold climate they learnt that wine is good for health. So, value is taught and arguments within it make cultural distance between debater.
I don’t know why I feel that this poem is related to the other poem you wrote in the previous issue: “When you hear the word” and is not a new idea.
You know what Rarest Of The Rare

That is your point of view and this is mine. You should have proper respect towads mine as I do yours. I don't agree with you but I have an obligation to respect it.
Now, a few clarifications, I am not criticzing nor am I devaluing the 'life style' of -all- women of teh present day socety. If you read my poem thoroughly, you would understand that. I am simply expressing a feeling I have to many women who are ruining themselves. Distorting how they were created, in a desperate attempt to make themselves be "Beautiful" when in fact they are just falling victim and losing themsleves. This might get too long, jus on last statement. Plastic surgery is not a value in a culture. Not culture promotes plastic surgery. That is society. And there is a big difference btw Culture and society.

u r correct.
but one thing seems cotroversial to me.
culture and society are two different things but not opposit.culture reflects the collective thoughts of society.
culture is created and changed by dominant class of a society (which class ,depends on society itself).now if some new thing like plastic surgery is entering into society, the underlying secret is the thinking of dominant class i.e. man, not woman
Beauty is only skin deep African

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Its only skin deep. One man's meat is always another one's poison. There are always some people somewhere who love you just the way you are.
Great job Kirsten Jordan

You have summed up beautifully how women worldwide are trying to fit a mold; trying not to deviate from society's definition of beauty.
I loved the line "Everyone sizing one up" as it is so true; whenever I got out socially I find other people eyeing me up to see what I'm wearing, what make-up, what handbag...
