Information
Beskrivning:
In this lesson, students review the photos they took during GRUB Lesson 4 (Taking Pictures that Illustrate Food Systems Issues) and identify those they consider to be the most interesting and/or meaningful. They then contextualize the photos by adding accompanying captures developed through the SHOWED Process:

S - What do we SEE or how do we name this problem?
H - What is really HAPPENING?
O - How does this story relate to OUR lives?
W - WHY does this problem or strength exist? What are the root causes?
E - How might we become EMPOWERED now that we better understand the problem?
D - What can we DO about it?

5.1: SHOWED Model Questions

Materials
• Laptop and projector
• USB cord to download photos

Tid behövd:
90 – 120 minutes

Process:
1. Choose photographs: Ask students to choose 2 to 4 pictures that they like the best or think best reflects themes relevant to food systems. Remind participants that they will be asked to show selected pictures to the group and describe them in depth, so they should choose pictures that they are comfortable sharing. Download photos onto a laptop so they can be projected.

2. Contextualize the pictures: Emphasize that images often mean different things to different people and that this is their strength. Provide the students with handout 5.1.

3. Apply the SHOWED process: Have students take turns leading the SHOWED process with their photos. They can speak to each question first and then ask their peers for their interpretations. Either the educator or one of the youth should take notes on the ideas that emerge.

4. Write and present captions: Ask youth to take their SHOWED notes and turn them into a 4 to 8 sentence caption. Once youth have written their captions, each photo essay (picture and caption) can be presented to the whole group. To conclude, facilitate a group discussion focusing on a more in-depth analysis of the collective set of photos and the issues they represent.
