Description:
Mobile phones in collaboration is an extension of the activity Mobile Phones which is posted in the Activiity Database. Mobile phones in collaboration engages students in global classrooms in an online dialogue about cellphones, the impact cell phones have in their lives and the cell phone's potential for benefiting third world countries.

Outcomes:
Students who participate in this project willl be able to
• recognize the impact of the cell phone in countries around the world
• to critically reflect , design and evaluate ways that mobile phone technology can benefit third world countries.
•contribute and collaborate in online dialogue with global peers

Tools & Materials:
Computers with internet connection
TIGed classroom with classroom tools enabled. ( discussion board, blogs )

Time Required:
4-6 Lessons.

Process:
1. Registered TIGed teachers use the TIGed collaboration tool to invite potential partners to join them in the Mobile phone in Collaboration.

2. Lead teacher and students create a poll designed to determine the impact that cell phones have in a person's life. Brainstorm questions for the poll in class and post the poll in the Class Discussion in a new thread opened especially for participants in the project. Choose the option: Poll.
Partner classes can also design polls : Ideas for polls include
Average amount of cell phones in the household.
Average age..
Average number of hours spent on line
Average $ spent on cell phone
Averge # of text messages a month/day/year

3. Students are encouraged to research ways in which mobile phones are currently benefitting third world countries. Results of the research should be posted online to student blogs, or discussion threads.

4. Students can form international groups to brainstorm new ideas for mobile phones in third world countries. See online brainstorming tool. The groups can promote and showcase their ideas in the student blog.
5. Partners should be encouraged to comment on each others ideas
