Description:
Students discuss mobile phones and the impact this technology has on their lives. They then research ways mobile phones are currently benefitting third world countries. After having acquired , digested and presented this knowledge to their peers, students are challenged to brainstorm new ideas for how mobile phones could benefit third world countries.

Outcomes:
Students who participate in the Mobile Phone project will :
1. Discuss the history of the cell phone
2. Promote appropriate use of the cell phone in social settings
3. Critically reflect and evaluate ways that mobile phone technology is benefiting third world countries.
4. present new uses of mobile phones designed to benefit third world countries.

Tools & Materials:
Computers with internet access
TIGed virtual classroom with student blogs, discussion boards, and student writing enabled

Time Required:
3- 4 Lessons

Process:
1. Engage students in a discussion about technology and its impact on our lives.
Use intro from TIG http://issues.takingitglobal.org/technology
2. Focus on cell phones. Discuss the history of the cell phone. Resource slideshow: http://tech.msn.com/products/slideshow.aspx?cp-documentid=4864891
3. Discuss the different features and students' personal opinion about cell phones as being important or unimportant to them. Discuss the potential problems that cell phones can cause regarding, status, expenses etc
4. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages :
Have students work in groups to create a list of advantages and disadvantages of cell phones. Combine groups to create a final list.
5. Encourage students to generate questions for an online poll about cell phones and the impact on society. To create a poll go to TIGED Class Discussion,create a new thread and choose the option: poll.
6. Proper use campaigns : Have students create campaigns for proper cell phone use in terms of the social context. Students can create multimedia campaigns , with visuals and text. Final products can be posted online in the classroom blogs.

7. Cell phones and developing countries. Have students work in groups and esearch the ways in which cell phones are currently being used in third world countries. Each group should present their findings to the rest of the class.
8. Based on what they have learned in their research have students brainstorm new ideas for ways in which mobile phones can be used to support, third world countries . 9. Sharing: Have students blog or podcast their action plans in their TIGed virtual classroom. Invite comments from participating classrooms.
