Manitoba-Canada Project Manager, International Institute for Sustainable Development Development is about freedom from hunger, illiteracy, disease, poor housing and insecurity. Inequalities in these areas need recognition, understanding, time and commitment to action. The Millennium Development Goals represent a plan that, if implemented, could just be the greatest achievement of responsible and sustainable development. At the United Nations Millennium Summit in 2000, 189 Heads of State and Government pledged to work together to create a better world. On behalf of their peoples, they signed the Millennium Declaration which promises to free men, women and children from the dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty and make the right to development a reality for everyone. They adopted eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG), committing rich and poor countries to a global partnership by 2015.
