Student voices are key. Education has become an essential tool for those fighting against poverty, those promoting sustainable development and those simply trying to make sense of and survive in an increasingly complex world. At the same time, it is becoming clear that old teaching methods and learning environments are not working. Between students with varying learning styles, new educational technologies and an increasingly global society, educators cannot simply continue to teach as they always have before.

We need you to help us bring student voices to the largest educational computing conference in the United States, the National Educational Computing Conference. Over the next five weeks, we will ask you to think about the roles education, learning and technology play in your lives, and then express your thoughts and ideas through both photography and online communications. Don't worry if you don't have any experience with photography - we have a guide to the process for you to browse, and we will help you brainstorm each week before you started.

After five weeks of discussions and photo blogging, four participants will be selected - based on an application and on participation through the project - to prepare a presentation based on the work of all participants, and then travel to Philadelphia and share the photographs and ideas with thousands of teachers at the end of June!

What do I have to do?

  1. Make sure you are familiar with TIG's Terms of Service and are aware that we could be using any photoblog or discussion content for our final presentation and publication. If you have any questions, email [email protected]
  2. Complete the photoblog task each week (by Sunday at midnight Easter Standard Time). After reading the directions (posted on Monday every week), plan, shoot, and upload one or more pictures, along with a detailed explanation or analysis of your photo.
  3. Review the other participants photo blogs, make comments, and reply to comments posted on your blog.
  4. Add your input to the weekly discussion boards.

After the five-week consultation is over, check this page for a link to evaluate the program and apply to become a presenter at NECC in Philadelphia - all costs covered. We will be choosing four students from around the world to join us at the conference - everyone else will have the opportunity to share their ideas for the final presentation, and we will use as much of the content developed over the course of the project as possible.

If you have any question, please email [email protected]

Week One: How do you see your world?

Take a few moments to think about your life. What issues are important to you? What are you proud of? What challenges do you face? This week, we are going to examine the issues that impact your lives, how you deal with them, and the role that education and learning play in shaping your perspective.

Week Two: How does technology impact your life?

Technology obviously plays a role in your life: you're on the Internet, using a digital camera, blogging... Just to take part in this process, you had to have learned quite a few skills, and may be learning more as we progress. This week, we are going to discuss the impact technology has on your life, positive or negative.

Week Three: How do you like to learn?

What is the most exciting, engaging learning experience you've ever had? Think hard - it doesn't have to be a really interesting lesson at school, although those count. It could have happened at a conference, at your job, at home, while you were hanging out with friends, or while you were surfing the Internet. This week, we want to discover how you learn best, and discuss the difference between learning and education.

Week Four: What does your ideal classroom look and feel like?

Over the last few weeks, you have thought a lot about how you like to learn, how technology helps you learn, and how your current classrooms are enabling or hindering your learning. Now it's time to think about what you'd like to see - what your ideal classroom would look like.

Week Five: What are your dreams and concerns for the future of education?

This week, think about the last four weeks, and how what you've photographed and discussed has influenced your ideas about education and learning. Based on these new impressions, what are your dreams for the future of education? How will you help to achieve them? How will you help to implement your ideal classroom?
