Dinner with Dr. Serageldin
May 11th, 2002 by Jennifer Cottes
Last night the YES team met at the Southern New Hampshire University to honour Dr. Ismail Serageldin. Serageldin is receiving an Honorary Doctorate from NHU and the Center for Economic Development. H
more
was the first Vice-President at the World Bank in charge of Environmental and Socially Sustainable Development from 1994-2000, now he is the Director of the Library of Alexandria, where YES will be held this September.
Okay, that was the background info. :P I had such a great time! Dr. Seragledin gave us a wonderfully entertaining history lesson of Egypt. He began with Aristotle and finished with....well, today. It felt short, as his speech was sweet, funny and interesting....definitely not your average academic speech, with tendencies for boredom. It also happened to be his birthday, so everyone surprised him with cake and flowers and of course "Happy Birthday".
The dinner party was a challenge, no less. There were so many people from the Center for Economic Development who were interested in learning about YES. Being in the office so much, I hardly get the chance to communicate what I know. It was good practice, especially given that these people have good knowledge if the International Development Community. I also found myself to be very bashful regarding my responsibility to develop our Knowledge Resource web site.
There was also a new reason to be grateful that day. In New York, just hours earlier, Poonam Ahluwalia, the Summit Director, and Suzanne Mubarak, the Summit Co-Chair, met with Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations. It resulted in a press conference with about 50 different press personal attending. Kofi Annan had announced that he will endorse the Summit! Poonam said that the room was full of energy and the sense of commitment to creating youth employment was vibrant.
I love my "job" and the energy I get from it. The most valuable thing I have learned so far, is that any individual can accomplish anything when there mind and heart is put into it.

WHAT I THINK ABOUT TIME
November 19th, 2002 by maxwell
TIME – tick tack tick tack……
TIME could be said to be as (dubbed from the oxford advanced dictionary):
· All the days of the past, present and future.
· The passing of all the days, month
more
and years, taken as a whole
· Portion of measure of
· Point of ~ stated in many hours, minutes and seconds of the day
· Point or period ~ associated with, or available or suitable for, a certain event, purpose etc
· Occasion
· (often pl) the conditions of life, the circumstances, etc of a period characterized by certain qualities, etc
It sounds strange to be talking about TIME this way but it all happened one day as I sat in a bus hoping to get to school early because I had an exams to write. Here I was in this bus that was stuck in traffic and all I was doing was cussing myself and wishing I had not been here at all. This was an examination that could take me to the next stage of my life or back to square one and I was stuck in this suffocating bus. I then kept wishing if I could turn back the hand of TIME, I would have woken up early, taken my shower early, taken breakfast early and most importantly join an early bus to school. I kept wishing and praying for a miracle because I cannot afford to miss this most important examination. I did not know what happened but all of sudden I started to think much more about TIME in whole. It dwelt so much on me that as I kept thinking and thinking about it, I was astonished and enlightened by the brief information I gathered and new discovery I have made that day. I got myself relaxed and let go the thought of getting to school on TIME and all I was doing was to engage all of the little inconvenience to think more about TIME. I took out my notebook and started scribbling every thought down that came popping up in my head and oh my! trust me, it was the most astonishing, entriguing and remarkable information and research I have ever done in the shortest TIME on the bus and speaks volumes and volumes of life, about life and in life. Anyway I was so deep in my thoughts I did not realized the bus has stopped at my school and was about to move. I immediately prompted the driver in TIME and he being so good stopped for me to alight. I run straight to the exams hall.Fortunately TIME smiled at me; they were waiting for the examiner.Good news! Anyway I wrote the exams and passed successfully but I also learnt an important thing of this world and that is what I am going to share with you and anyone who TIME brings here to read. I have learnt great deal and my life has been in a totally different and supposedly right direction since that day and it is going to do so to you spend TIME and patience to read. So enjoy every bit of it and share with the world what you have gained this day.
TIME so far as I know had been there since the creation of the universe. It has been part of life and has been our life. Sometimes we look at it with no regards or respect and yet it judges and determines what we are going to become in future. And that is why we hear ourselves say many TIMEs that “TIME will tell”. Yes it does really tell a lot and it actually commands every move and events of ours and yet we don’t see it that way because we believe we made it happen. It is true we made it but it was due to a specific TIME we made it and that is why it was so.
There are many ways I define TIME and some are:
· Take It Most Essential
· Technology In Many Economies
· Thief In Many Errands
· Tricks Insecure Men Everyday
· Testing Important Moments of Everyone
· Truth If Mentioned Early helps
· TIME Invariably Manages Everything
· Touched Individuals in Many Ends
· Touched In Many Ends
· Took It to Mould Earth
· Teaching Individuals Means Everything
· That Individuals Might Excel
TIME – Take It Most Essential
TIME has been one of most essential factors of each and every one of our lives and we sometimes have ignored its importance because we believe we are at liberty to do what we like at any TIME we choose. Well that is true for those who want to end up without anything to look on as an achievement. When we put TIME considerably in every aspect of our lives, we tend to make a lot of progress and in an orderly or sensible successive manner. An example or situation that happens in our everyday life is when you going for a job interview and you are giving a specific TIME to show up. That factor of showing at the right TIME alone can or may or will guarantee you whether you will get the job or not and in most cases when you do not make it in TIME you never get the job because it is believed at every work place that "TIME is money" and so it must not be wasted. That brings me to the next one
TIME - Technology In Many Economies
Looking at the economies of many countries, the world economists have been able to come out with three different identities for different countries and their economies. We now have the First class world countries, the second class world countries and third class world countries. We also have the Developed countries, the developing countries and under developed countries. These all calculated and categorized to the TIME factor. Some countries in the third world are claimed to two hundred and fifty (250) years behind civilization, development and democracy. Many economies have been so much use of the TIME that they are benefiting the fruits of it and that is many ideas are being moulded into many technologies today and TIME invariably has been a great factor. Whenever we work in accordance with TIME great achievements are chalked. There are two things I noticed among two different economies, that is an economy using the TIME as an essential factor and another ignoring the TIME as a whole but they are both working efficiently. Now in a developed world the habit of running to work and making it in TIME is not something that could be found in the under developed world. Whereas you are paid according to the TIME one spends working, in the under developed world you are just paid monthly only for appearing at office whether some work was done or not. The under developed still keep lacking behind and the developed moves so fast that the gap keeps widening and TIME becomes one economy’s friend and the other its enemy. A successful government knows what TIME means in his reign. It can ruin the economy or make a better one. Therefore TIME in every economy becomes not a choice but a must. IT waits for no economy. Either you join the wagon early or you are left behind. TIME has left many economies behind. Some catching up, others trying hard to catch up and others will never catch up. Tick tack tick tack that is the clock. What does it do?
TIME - Tricks Insecure Men Everyday / Testing Important Moments of Everyone
Yes it really does trick insecure men every blessed day including you and me. We make so many stupid and reflex decisions we end up most of the TIME making a fool of ourselves. Insecure means lack of confidence and what does lack of confidence do? It makes you very reluctant; that is slow to act because you are not sure and guess what TIME does not sit down on your comfortable sofa waiting for the answer but you only hear tick tack tick tack and your guess is as good as mine. TIME just keeps running. Very unfair indeed but while we run with it lets try as much to shake off insecurity, stand firm and accurately come out with higher thinking. Let us learn to trick or stick to TIME. Is it possible? Remember a pilot knows what to do when the gear box on a plane fails. What about you, what will you do when you reach the crossroads? And be mindful of TIME running. TIME tricks insecure men everyday. We got fooled ones, well it is ok, twice, well too bad but ok but the third TIME, and you are a fool. Insecure men out there I hope you read me. Had I known is always at last. All of us have made so many important decisions that have changed our destinies or should I say our future. There had been TIMES when the decision one has made has had great or irreversible effect on many people which sometimes has been very adverse or sometimes very good. Now if at the TIME those decisions have not been made some of us,will not have been born. Remember at one particular TIME two people, a female and a male made a decision to “fuse” and produce you. That TIME if they had not I wonder where I will be by now. Tick tack tick tack…………
TIME - Thief In Many Errands
Of course you should know by now that whenever you do not wake up early for work or school we always do miss our bus, flights and schedules. That is why it means Thief In Many Errands. You are so bent on doing everything you planned for the day and here comes TIME and takes away everything. First you start to project what you have and it is so important you finish it up and must be accurate because your company needs it so much that day and so you take very good care and TIME to do it.Only to realize you are behind TIME for your daughters graduation ceremony and when you get there the ceremony is over. You probably sit there and stare at the sky hoping to get a tangible reason to tell her.Guess what? The only reason for her when open your mouth is to say "due to TIME constraints and traffic you could not make it here early" and guess who looks over your shoulder and laughs at you? The almighty TIME the thief. It has again stolen a precious moment of you and your daughter’s life. And yet we disregard it and forget all about protecting ourselves from his treacherous fingers which will not spare those who disregard it. Atleast we know he is a thief of errands. Let’s just keep it away from him. The end result of his stealing is disappointment, dissatisfaction, frustration and insecure. Hey! Protect yourself. TIME is around, tick tack tick tack…….
TIME - Truth If Mentioned Early helps
Is it true that when you tell the truth, it shall always set you free and I mean free. That is what TIME tells us everyday in our lives. But do we listen and act accordingly as soon as possible or sometimes we wait and when it is too late then we act. Lateness in speaking or coming out with the truth has caused a lot of people so much pain, some losing relations, some partners, some being jailed, some getting killed, some losing trust and a government going corrupt and even a government being overthrown due to delay of speaking or coming out with the truth of the economy. I have learnt that whenever you come out with the truth it always gives you a sense of release and you are free from any guilt. At least you are ready for the consequences and may know what will happen next. TIME always alerts us that we should speak the truth when we speak it helps a lot and saves us a lot of troubles. All I want to say is that a stitch in TIME saves nine. Do not wait till it is too late before you come out with the truth. If we all know that the more TIME we spend to keep the truth away from people the more pain we cause both the people and ourselves. So which one would you do? Say it early or late? Do you hear what I hear? Listen …tick tack tick tack...hmmm….that is the clock again. TIME! TIIIIME!!! TIIIIIIIIME!!!!!!!!!
TIME – Took It to Mould Earth
Almost every religion acclaims that there is a beginning and there is an end. I know as a Christian that God took six days to create the world and rested on the seventh day. So we realize that even God is aware of the essentiality of TIME and he used it judiciously to make what the world is today. He is still creating new things and still using the TIME factor. One thing I know He does most that is that he answers our prayers at the right TIME and not just when we want it. As a good scientist and architect He has arranged and moulded everything to fit into each other and work hand in hand that we have a perfect world except for humans who are always abusing the concept of TIME. Just look at day and night. They run their shifts so well just like spring, fall. Summer and winter. They all have a principle they follow and that is the principle of TIME. Without this I am very sure there is going to be disaster and I do not even think the earth will still be where it is today. TIME has really been a great factor. Eclipse happen and we can even determine when they will happen all because the great creation of TIME. Out of the signs of weatherover a period of TIME ,we have been able to save many individuals from cyclones, typhoons, etc which could have been much more disastrous. I am glad God had it there before I was born else I would not know what to do at what TIMEt. Thank you God for such a wonderful gift. Tick tack tick tack…………..
TIME - Teaching Individuals Means Everything / That Individuals Might Excel
Did you know one of our greatest teachers have been TIME and that is what we call EXPERIENCE and we have not giving it the recognition it deserves. Through TIME a lot of great lessons have been learnt individually, groups and the world in whole. Some of us have enjoyed or benefited great deal today becaise ofthe experiences we have had through TIME travel. Some being from our childhood and some in our adolescent stage and some in adult age. Some have been so painful to be bare but if TIME has not made us learn, I am also sure we will still be in our dark little worlds believing that is the only world. Through TIME I have learnt to take charge of my destiny. I have learnt to take responsibility for my actions. It all happened TIME after TIME, after learning the great lessons TIME has to offer. You know some of us are so thick headed that they are still not getting anything from what TIME has been offering since the birth of it. They keep repeating the same mistakes they have made years back and TIME being so merciful gives them the chance to change over and over again. I also realized an important thing about it; that is throughout the period it teaches you is that you pay dearly for wasting precious moments within it he offered. So let us all excel in life and try as much as possible to make use of the little TIME we have on it and what TIME has to offer us. Life is short to do a lot of procrastination. Tick tack tick tack…….clock is ticking.
CONCLUSION
I have realized that we must take life serious because our days are numbered and every second of our life may be of importance to another. Out of our actions today will be manifested in our children to come, generations upon generations. TIME is running so fast.Iit is not waiting for anyone and has never seized to look back whether it has left some of us behind. I know a lot of us have made so many mistakes in trying to walk with TIME. It is not too late to catch up with it but it is going to be very difficult. We must watch the TIMEs before we make decisions. Let’s help build this world together and make it a better place. The little TIME we have left in our lives let us use it profitably.
MY THEORY
Ummm this is my own perception about TIME and anyone who reads this is free to believe it, enjoy it, appreciate my effort or at least write to me and criticize. I love criticism. It gives you the opportunity to do much better work in life. Let me go on with what I have to say. Do you know that many coincidences will not have happened if those two things had delayed a bit or moved faster from each ? Do you know a second of delay sometimes saves the life of many who may have been in an accident. The reason being could just be that because you swerved the other car by some few inches away. And all we say is “I was lucky”. But come to think of it, I realize they are all related to TIME and place. Now I am going to get a little complicating and philosophical here; think about this and you can choose to make sense about it or diregard it. Do you know if your dad had not met your mum at a particular frame of TIME you will not be existing in the first place. Do you know if your mum and dad had missed a second you will not have the family you have and probably life will not have been the way it is today. They make it what it is today and so it is you. Do you know if you were not to be around,it will make a great difference? Think about it this way, I keep advising people, I keep tolerating people, I keep helping people, people keep helping me, people keep tolerating me, etc, etc. now if my parents have not met at the particular TIME, who would I be tolerating, which kind of people would I be helping, who are those who will be tolerating me and helping me and in fact which part of the world will I be by now. May be the sky. May be prison, may be the president or may be the beggar. So you see how TIME has made many of our parents meet. In fact the same applies to our grandparents and the generations that have come to pass. The timing of everything is so perfect that everything happens for a reason.
I am very sure if there were not the 1st world war and 2nd world war, the world will not be where it is today. I am very sure it will have been a much better place or probably a worse place to be. So many incidents had happen in TIMEs of the past that we are repeating those mistakes again. Diseases that afflicted many in past in many countries have helped doctors to develop medicines to combat it over TIME. If not for Newton’s law of gravity would any of us be on moon by now? What I am trying to say is that TIME controls everything so much that whatever you do TIME has to make sure you reap exact of it. Remember what goes around comes around and life is what you make of it. TIME is not for lazy people because they will always fail. Procrastination is the thief of TIME. I guess I have to leave you here to make your decisions and addition or subtraction to what I have written. It is a bit cumbersome but that is because it is coming straight from my head and wants to remain that way. There are lessons to learn in our TIME. Lets make use of it and let’s also realize each and everyone we meet has a purpose in our lives and that is why we met them. They had a reason to be there and that is why they are. You may not know they may have saved you from an accident that may happen in future because they delayed you by talking 'unnecessarily' to you. Whether they make sense or not learn to have TIME for everybody because none of us know what that person may offer. Who knows, that could be TIME himself. Tick tack tick tack tick ta…………………..

Suprise.....
November 25th, 2002 by Ahmed Ali Mire
During my second month of Accounting and Management school, our professor gave us a pop
quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the
questions, until I read the last one: "What is
more
the first name of the
woman who cleans the school?" Surely this was some kind of joke. I had
seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in
her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving
the last question blank. Before class ended, one student asked if the
last question would count toward our quiz grade. Absolutely," said the
professor. "In your careers you will meet many people. All are
significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is
smile and say 'Hello'." I've never forgotten that lesson.
I also learned her name was Sahra.

A Big Mug of Coffee
January 9th, 2003 by Wainaina
A big mug of Kenyan coffee is recommended for all those staying up late conjuring up new strategies for empowering youth.
Many young Kenyans (60% of the population) are looking forward to the Elec

ion next year as an opportunity to finally 'take over' that big mug of Kenyan coffee. Seeing as it is that the President read a speech that ended up being reported as "Kenya: Kibaki in Pledge to Help Youth" http://allafrica.com/stories/200603160070.html ...it is time I declare my interest in the big mug of Kenyan coffee...
My congrats go out to all those working hard to put together the Youth Employment Summit (YES) scheduled for Nairobi some time in September. May the youth know that the big mug of coffee will have to be 'taken...not given' as the President's speech implied...so don't sit back and wait.
On the other end of the city,....some serious comedians {Reddykyulass}, a few celebrities and might-be-celebrities...two Presidential hopefuls and a few beer-chasers were launching - "Vijana Tugutuke" - a major plan that may ultimately give the youth that big mug of coffee. It's a voter education programme that supported by the Institution for Education in Democracy (IED).
Enough about the Power Mug,...

MCC (Metropolitan Community Church) Toronto... a Brief History
February 11th, 2003 by Dan Trepanier
During the spring of 1973, a group of individuals wrote to the head office of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches in Los Angeles requesting that they send a pastor to Toronto t

start a new church. In July of 1973, Reverend Bob Wolfe arrived in the city and the first worship service was held with 12 people on July 17, 1973. In 1977 Rev. Brent Hawkes became Pastor. Visit Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto
Over the years, the congregation has gathered in a variety of different buildings. We met in offices, backyards, church halls and church chapels. In 1985 we bought our first church building at 2029 Gerrard Street East and moved into it on December 8. We were the very first lesbian and gay organization in Canada to own our own property!
In 1991 we moved into our present church home at 115 Simpson Avenue. In response to our growing numbers we added the 9 a.m. service in the spring of 1994. So many people want to be part of our Christmas Eve and Pride Day services that we must move off site to Roy Thomson Hall and to Church Street for these special
services.
MCC Toronto is proud that we have assisted many other gay and lesbian groups in getting started. We helped organize the first PFLAG meeting and we paid for the telephone line in their first year of operation. We have provided office space for the Toronto Counselling Centre for Lesbians and Gays, for Lesbian & Gay Youth Toronto, Collation for Lesbian and Gay Rights in Ontario to name a few. We continue to host the Toronto District School Board’s Triangle Program for Gay and Lesbian Youth.
SOCIAL JUSTICE
Our congregation has been at the centre of many key struggles for equality. In 1986 we supported Bill 7, adding sexual orientation to the Ontario Human Rights Code. In 1994 we supported Bill 167 in favour of equal rights. In 1996 we went to the Supreme Court of Canada as interveners in support of Egan and Nesbit in the constitutional question of same sex spousal recognition under the Old Age Security Act. As a result of this case, the rights of gay and lesbian couples was recognized and sexual orientation was read into the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In 1999 Rev. Hawkes testified in the M vs. H case on spousal support provisions in family law. The ruling in this case was the first to hold that same sex couples receive equitable treatment under the constitution.
SAME SEX MARRIAGE RIGHTS
In the fall of 2000, we made a decision that the time was right for our church to take the next step in our pursuit of equal marriage rights in Canada. Our Lawyers developed a strategy that was built on a combination of The Ontario Marriage Act and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. In January of 2001 we legally married two same-sex couples but the Registrar General of Ontario refused to register the marriage documents. We took the provincial government to court and our case was heard in November of 2001. The decision handed down in July 2002, declared the law unconstitutional and but provides the federal government two years to make the necessary changes. The federal government has decided to appeal this decision and a similar one made in Quebec.
