Johannesburg, August (GYRP) – German delegates flying out to the World Summit on Sustainable Development had air tickets as usual, but they also had ‘Climate Tickets.’

This is an innovative youth-driven project designed to help offset carbon dioxide emissions from aeroplane flights. Airline passengers purchase an optional Climate Ticket with their regular flight ticket, and the money is invested in youth-organised environmental action.

The scheme was presented here by Germanwatch, a youth lobbying group on sustainable development based in Germany, as an example of best practice in the youth environmental field.

Corinne Moser, Co-President of Climate Ticket, told Summit delegates: “In Switzerland 13 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions come from flights. We have such a good opportunity to make a difference.”

The German Government bought Climate Tickets for all its Summit delegates. Moser hopes to make them widely available soon in travel agencies across western Europe.
